About Harry Zelenko and His Abiding Love of Orchids
Harry was a born-and-bred New Yorker who moved to Quito, Ecuador, 25 years ago to be near the orchids. He was a New York phenomenon, and was profiled for his orchid obsession in Interview, The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and other major media, and was even a character in the bestselling book, The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession by Susan Orlean and the Nicolas Cage movie, Adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. Harry Zelenko was a judge at The New York International Orchid Show and was flown to orchid conferences to speak around the globe, from Sweden to Kuala Lumpur. The book features images of the orchids he personally collected along with contributions from others and essays from renowned experts, including Mark W. Chase of London’s Kew Royal Botanic Gardens.
Climbing mountains, hiking through rainforests, Harry collected thousands of orchids from nearly every corner of the world, and identified each specimen to perfection. He passed away in 2024, and was already an award-winning designer, along with his wife, when he became noted for his dedication to orchids.
