This summer, I’m making a small but intentional change: spending less time on my phone and more time doing things that actually connect me to people. My plan? Learn Mahjong. How hard can it be? (Gulp).
Instead of mindlessly doomscrolling, I’m setting aside time to sit down with my mom, sister, and neighbor to learn something new together. It’s equal parts challenge and quality time and exactly the kind of reset I’ve been craving. I’m sure I’m not alone.
If you’ve been looking for a sign to unplug a little more, this might be it. Want to join me?
I’m using The Mahjong House Travel Set because it feels high-quality, approachable, modern, and honestly, just really beautiful. The tiles are crisp white with rich, jewel-toned detailing that makes everything easier to see, seemingly perfect for beginners who want something stylish but not intimidating.
I went with the travel-friendly size because it will be easy to bring anywhere – kitchen tables, patios, or living rooms, etc. I didn’t want any big setup that would take up space or formal plan but you do you, as the kids say.
The Mahjong House itself is a big reason I felt confident starting here. The brand focuses on making Mahjong accessible and inviting, especially for newcomers and at the same time, the quality of the set means it’s not just a “starter kit.”
So far, Mahjong is forcing me to be present. You can’t check your phone mid-hand. You have to pay attention, ask questions and actually interact. There’s confusion, obviously, and a learning curve, but it’s not about getting everything right. It’s about showing up and doing something together to create new memories instead of sitting around talking about old ones – or politics or work or the stressors of life.
If you’re curious but don’t know where to begin, this guide has been incredibly helpful as I learn:

It walks through everything in a way that feels manageable, not overwhelming and it’s exactly what you want when you’re just starting out.
