Known as the Queen of the Curls in NYC, lauded hairstylist Nubia Rëzo recommends washing hair just once a week for optimum hair health. Some may think that’s unconventional, but Nubia has a system and it works. The owner and founder of Rëzo Salon on Madison Avenue and of Rëzo Haircare, Beauty News NYC was excited to sit down with Nubia to learn more about line and her expertise on hair.
You have quite an impressive background. Could you please tell our readers more about yourself and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Colombia and moved to the United States in 1975. When I was younger, I was always running around with a pair of scissors in my hand and knew that it was my destiny to become a hairstylist. When I got to the United States, I began working under hairstyling legends such as Goldwell, L’Oréal, Wella, Vidal Sassoon, DevaCurl, Ouidad, Aveda, Paul Sebastian and Mazella and Palmer where I learned everything about cut, color, style, and where the blank spaces were in the market.
What was your inspiration to start your own business?
I noticed that the industry was lacking curl services coupled with a dearth of good haircare products, so I decided to give the curly hair community an authentic space to pamper themselves and to learn about the best way to take care of, and to fall in love with, their curls. I love empowering my curly hair community to be proud of their natural texture and shift judgments from society surrounding 2c to 4c curls in the workplace and beyond. I’m also a mother of two and sole provider for my family, and as a Colombian woman, it’s been ingrained in me to work as hard as I possibly can to achieve my goals.
What exactly is your signature rëzoCut?
The Rëzocut is the only cut in the world that cuts in round circles, trimming curls with the rose technique’s invisible elevations. This special cut helps to deliver balance and shape and flawlessly blends textures and liberates curls from the root area so they can move about freely and provide more volume.
You say we only need to wash our hair once a week. Could you please elaborate on this?
In general, the more you shampoo, the drier your curls become due to harsh ingredients found in many formulas that will strip the hair of its natural oils. I recommend allowing nature to do its job by washing hair just once a week, as hair tends to become bigger and bigger as days go by. Using 80% water 20% products to remove dirt is a good rule of thumb and this will ensure that hydration is being locked into the hair follicle which will enhance the curl pattern.
What would your top hair tip be?
Less is more!
Anything else we should know?
