The Mains & Sides
The Caribbean restaurant MangoSeed Brooklyn is a quick and easy stride from Prospect Park in Flatbush, serving standards such as Jerk Chicken, Braised Oxtail, Jerk Cornish Hen, Rice and Peas, Sweet Plantains, Fish Tacos, Escovitch Fish, and Jerk Salmon in a heavenly tomato-coconut sauce – along with equally delicious American fare such as Flatbush Wings, the MangoSeed Angus Doublestack Smash Cheeseburger, Quad Mac-and-Cheese, a Chicken and Gouda Sandwich, and much more. The chef’s upscale flair renders MangoSeed one of the best restaurants in the city, albeit in one of the most unassuming but delightful locations: in front of a local bike repair shop.

Jerk Salmon and a side of cabbage
Chef and co-owner Paul Burrowes clearly knows what he is doing, as everything from his recipes to the plating to the delicious intermingled flavors demonstrates his artfulness and thoughtfulness. The Mac-and-Cheese as a side dish is exquisite, and it is filling enough for a main plate or to split with someone. The fries taste like fresh potatoes, not frozen, and the jerk sauce brings on the fire, but in balance with the other flavors. In a word, the menu’s offerings are perfect.

The Refreshing Libations

Drinks include the Caribbean staple Rum Punch along with the unique Honey Sidecar (premium Cognac. Grand Marnier, Orange Bitter, Honey Drizzle), Margaritas, Brooklyn Mule (overproof Rum, House-made Pomegranate Liqueur, Ginger Beer, Bitters), other favorite cocktails, and truly inspired mocktails, like their guava, rosemary syrup and sparkling water drink as well as sugarcane lemonade, ginger beer, sodas, and more.

Desserts at MangoSeed include ice cream, Tiramisu, cheesecake and more, so try to save room, though it will be difficult… the servings are so generous, and the sides and appetizers so tasty, that fitting in dessert will be a challenge worth meeting.

Brunch at MangoSeed Brooklyn can be packed, so make a reservation and try the Parmesan Grits. In fact, dinner can be packed too, as the space is not enormous, but it is super-comfortable. You’ll sink into soft chairs amid eclectic musical offerings (I caught Buju Banton’s “Butterflies“), neighborhood regulars at the bar, and occasionally someone picking their bike up at the bike repair shop in the back of the restaurant. That repair shop is what renders MangoSeed Brooklyn such a uniquely lovable neighborhood place, and it’s food and friendly service is what draws people from all around the city, if not the world.

Try brunch or dinner here before or after a day frolicking in Prospect Park. What could be a better thing to do on a sunny summer day than to transport yourself to the Caribbean in New York City? And if you need your bike repaired, bring it along too.
