A Spoonful of Honey Can *Potentially* Keep the Doctor Away: Medicinal Uses of Honey

Beauty is an inside-out phenomenon. When our sleep is abundant, daily activity goals are met, and yummy home cooked meals are eaten; we can feel like a true beauty queen. Our bodies can take us where we never thought we would go when we treat it well – and treat your body well to some high quality honey. Now, I’ve written about honeys in the past, mostly for adding to my teas and toppings for my yogurt bowls, but this time around I’m testing out honey crafted to be full of superfoods, chemical free, and simply delicious.

Bee Healthy, a small honey company based in Rising Fawn, Georgia, is ran by Bella Donna, a holistic coach with a background in bee-keeping, herbalism, aromatherapy, and and apipuncture (a traditional oriental medicine technique that involves stimulating specific acu-points on the body using bee venom or bee stings). Her philosophy is “Prevention is better than a cure,” harking back to the Hippocrates’ quote “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine your food.” These are the wise words I took to heart as I began my journey using Bella’s Super Honey this past week.

Super Honey

In 2007, Bella was in search of a clean, chemically free honey. A lot honey sold in the US isn’t truly honey. According to the NIH, honey is adulterated with filtering, heating, and diluting with syrups like rice, cassava, beet, and high fructose corn syrup. Considering 70% of honey is imported, there is a shady path from bee to your grocery store basket due to lack of regulations abroad. Bella decided to take things into her own hands and whipped up Super Honey Plus for herself and clients.

Super Honey is a medicinal honey blend of ten honeys including Manuka. Other ingredients include cacao, coconut oil, bee pollen, cinnamon, cedarwood, maca root, Jerusalem artichoke, and rose hips. These superfoods infuse into the honey making the mixture even more powerful and potent when consumed once a day. I take a teaspoon in the morning first thing as I wait for my tea to brew. (I’ve been sipping on the Mountain Medley Tea Blend from Bella’s business. It contains mints, blackberry leaves, and lemon thyme for immune system strengthening).

The flavor of Super Honey is rich, robust, and down right yummy. It’s sophisticated honey that gives a boost of energy to take on my day. For this test I stopped taking my allergy medicine and only the honey. In the past week I’ve noticed less sneezing and coughing due to my allergies. Is it the honey? I believe so but I will continue taking it for the rest of the month to see. So far though, Super Honey is promising.

Strawberry-Rose Honey

When I was looking at honeys on Bella’s page I saw the coveted Strawberry-Rose Honey. The winner of the Good Foods national product award in 2024 for Best Honey, I knew I had to get a taste. This honey is simply divine with floral notes of intoxicating roses and a bright tart undertone of strawberry. According to Bella in Good Food’s review of her company, “Honey by itself is healing, and then if we can add something to it, it increases the healing power of the honey. If I take, for example, strawberries high in vitamin C, when mixed and blended with the honey, it increases the (health) value of the honey.”

I love the health benefits of this honey but I’m more in love with the flavor! I drizzle Strawberry-Rose Honey over nuts for a luxurious afternoon snack. Gift this honey to your holistic friend or foodie family member. A seal of an approval from me for Strawberry-Rose and Bee Healthy!
