As someone on a hybrid work schedule, I, like many others in New York City, love to seek inspiration outside the walls of my tiny apartment.
When I’m not in the office, I find myself exploring coffee shops with welcoming atmospheres and communal energy. Here are a few of my favorite places to work remotely, sip great-tasting coffee, and gain a bit of creativity while I’m at it.
Buunni Coffee, 4961 Broadway, New York, NY 10034
Buunni Coffee is an independent Ethiopian coffee shop that crafts its own small-batch roasted coffee beans. They have four locations across Washington Heights and Inwood and their coffee boasts a high-quality flavor, sourced from smallholder farms and farmers’ cooperatives.
They locally roast their beans once a week in micro batches to maintain peak freshness and deliver full, nuanced flavors. I have visited their Inwood location a handful of times and have always been greeted with a smile. Their Wi-Fi is strong and their food selection will have you coming back for more.
Devoción, 69 Grand St. (at Wythe), Brooklyn, NY 11249
Devocion is a coffee shop launched by Colombian-born Steven Sutton. With five locations across the city, Sutton’s goal was to produce the freshest coffee imaginable. They are one of the only coffee companies in the world that roasts true farm-fresh coffee only 10 days after leaving origin, quicker than the industry norm of 6-12 months.
Their Williamsburg location serves as a testament to their work since 2006. This cozy industrial-chic venue is actually housed in a former warehouse. It is spacious, boasts amazing interior decor, and is definitely the place to spark some creativity. The leather couches add a nice touch, and the strong WiFi never fails me.
787 Coffee, 159 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003
This Puerto Rican coffee chain has made a name for itself in the city with 18 locations to date. Their coffee is grown and roasted in the town of Maricao, Puerto Rico and their beans have delicious notes of dark chocolate, butter and citrus.
I love this Greenwich Village location because of it has an attached co-work space for customers. I think this bonus area really sets the tone for those who want to get work done but also allows for that community connection. The overall vibe is relaxed and the baristas have great knowledge on what they are preparing.
One of my favorite drinks is their coquito latte. It’s a variation of the traditional coquito that is blended with espresso to create a creamy and rich beverage that is the perfect combination of coffee and holiday flavors.
