A reddish-brown dwarf planet with an icy surface and rocklike core, Makemake (pronounced makei makei), rests within a donut-shaped region of icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. In 2005, Makemake’s discovery led to the creation of the ‘dwarf planet’ distinction. Makemake is the fifth-largest object in the Kuiper Belt and the second brightest dwarf planet. Taking between 305-310 Earth years to orbit the sun, one day on Makemake is equivalent to 7.77 Earth hours. Named after a Rapa Nui god of fertility, a beloved tribal deity to the people of what is now known as Easter Island, the celestial ‘Chief of Eggs’ inches ever so slowly through the zodiac, spending about twenty-five years in each sign. A live, simulated 3-D view of Makemake is available on the NASA website here.
According to astrologers Alan Clay and Melissa Billington in Astrology of Makemake: Uranus’ Higher Octave, what I draw from in my Makemake insights by house to follow, the network of asteroids and dwarf planets termed trans-neptunian objects (beyond Neptune aka TNO’s) were discovered at a time when humanity was ready to incorporate their medicine into our collective consciousness. However, as a planet with a longer orbit, Makemake’s wisdom is not easily or quickly integrated into our lived experience. In their book, Clay and Billington reflect that while the inner planets orbiting the Sun within the plane of the ecliptic represent consensus reality, the dwarf planets, with their oblong orbits, cut through the ecliptic and veritably cut through consensus reality. It’s a concept echoed in Demetra George and Douglas Bloch’s book ASTEROID GODDESSES, in which we learn that the far-out asteroids, like the dwarf planets, signify an expansive non-binary trajectory and a ‘quantum leap’ for human consciousness, facilitating evolution from individual ego understanding to collective interconnectivity.

Before the discovery of the outer planets, our solar system felt unintuitive and orthogonal. Astrologer Walter D. Pullen of Astrolog, has designated what he feels to be the largest and most significant seven Trans-Pluto (beyond Pluto) bodies, calling them the “Seven Dwarfs.” This grouping encompasses Eris (Discord, chaos, scheming), Haumea (Mothering, One as Many), Makemake (Fathering, creation), Gonggong (Rebellion, integration), Quaoar (Ritual creation, law), Sedna (Trauma, acceptance) and Orcus (Karma, reviewing). If you’ve been following my BEAUTYSCOPES, you know that we’ve been moving through the body of outer planets, click on Hygeia (Asteroid of Holistic Health), Juno (Goddess of Marriage), Eris (Goddess of Discord), Lilith (The Disavowed Feminine), Haumea (Fertility & Sacred Ecology), Pallas Athena (Warrior Princess), Vesta (Keeper of the Inner Flame), Ceres (The Great Mother) and Chariklo (Graceful Spinner) to review.
In Pullen’s cosmic taxonomy, he assigns each dwarf planet co-rulership of a sign, correlating Makemake with Leo. Pullen suggests that while Makemake is more abstract and psychological (less self-oriented) than the Sun, Leo’s traditional ruler, the fact that “Makemake challenges one to properly train, use and direct their sense of self-will,” makes the sign of creation/progeny appropriately paired to the male fertility god. Based on his Kuiper Belt research, he also identifies that the orientation of the “Seven Dwarf (Planets)” form Seven Rays of a ‘Cosmic Labyrinth,’ an energetic pathway etched in the sky beyond Pluto. A classic sequence of sacred geometry utilized in the seven-circuit Labyrinth, the artful design has been found in cultures around the globe, from ancient Greece to the Peruvian Andes and Scandinavia, to the sacred art of Native Americans. Pullen conceives of the formation both as an “energetic address” and a “welcome mat from our solar system to other systems or to the galaxy as a whole.”

Call them TNO’s, dwarfs, asteroids or what have you – study of the stars and heavenly bodies is one of the most ancient activities known to man. Like a treasure chest of wisdom, contemporary horoscopic astrology, as we know it, is the outcome of syncretism and storytelling across many cultures and continents. And while the stories we tell about prominent planets like Jupiter and Saturn may have emerged originally out of indigenous agricultural mythology – our current archetypes appear to be as disconnected from nature and feminine energy as mankind. Before the discovery of asteroids and dwarf planets, the primary feminine significators in astrology were Venus and the Moon. The outer planets are like specialty energies, more nuanced but nonetheless, a substantive part of our psychological makeup, the large majority of which have been named for indigenous creator gods and lesser-known feminine archetypes. By correcting the patriarchal monopoly on the mythic imaginary, destiny, and what’s possible, the study of the outlying asteroids and dwarf planets enables us to collectively explore new ways of cohabitating together as fellow human beings. Not only is exploring the psychic, transcultural roots of astrology a centering and life-sustaining gesture, the demons and spirits we encounter along the way put us in right relationship with the land.
According to Polynesian Rapa Nui mythology, Makemake is the principal creator god responsible for shaping the natural world order. Closely tied to fertility, seasonal cycles, and the abundance of resources like birds, fish and crops, Makemake was responsible for the fertility of Easter Island. Known as the Lord of the Bird-man cult or ‘Chief of Eggs,’ aka ‘Great Sea Spirit’ aka ‘Creator God of Abundance,’ Makemake’s association with birds, nesting and flying symbolizes the spirit of life itself and the masculine fertilizing principle. Ensuring we are running on divine time (and not empty) Makemake’s association with fowl signifies freedom, expansiveness and metaphysical vision.
Astrologically speaking, “Makemake drives spirit into our lives and opens us to see the bigger picture with a bird’s-eye view,” writes Clay. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it’s interesting to note the holiday occurs during Aquarius season. Hardly a sign associated with conventional romance or soulmate union; on the contrary, Aquarius represents taking a detached, ‘bird’s eye’ view of human relationships. Originally, V-day occurred at this time of year because it coincides with when birds in the wild choose their mates. And while surely Makemake affords “the eagle-eyed ability to see the bigger picture and also zoom in on the detail at the same time,” writes Clay, like other dwarf planets, the Bird-man’s slow, sweeping orbits mirror longer cycles of change, often revealing less personal and more generational themes around enlightened detachment and global consciousness. That being said, Makemake’s current cycle won’t reach its culminating position opposite the Sun until 2034, at which point the planet enters its waning phase. Clay informs that by 2034, humanity will potentially begin to refine the dwarf planet’s influence over the past 154 years to its essence, shifting away from amassing information to finding usable applications for Makemake’s wisdom in practical reality.

Before we go deeper into Makemake’s creation myths and application in a natal chart, let’s talk about the dwarf planet in relation to its lower octaves. Hailed as the ‘higher octave’ of Uranus, The Great Awakener, Makemake takes the awakener’s intuitive understanding and elevates it to an even more rich and contextual innerstanding we can incorporate into our lived experience on Earth. What exactly do we mean by higher octave? Well, consider that Neptune (Unconditional Love) represents the ‘higher octave’ of Venus (Romantic Love). If Uranus (Cosmic Consciousness) is the ‘higher octave’ of Mercury (Intelligence), Makemake is the next step, increasingly subtle and expansive, while still a vehicle of human will, subject to natural law and the reality of interconnection. Speaking for the outer planets in general, Clay reflects how “Most people on Earth experience the outer planets as unconscious influences,” as in “they barge into our lives in a confrontational way.” To the degree that we have evolved spiritually, we are able to tap into the outer planet energy and its ‘higher octave’ potential. Eventually, the hope is that “the higher octave acts on the inner octave to repolarize that energy in our daily lives,” writes Clay.
As for Makemake, a quick-witted, cosmic trickster of the zodiac, in the Bird-Man’s energetic signature, we perceive the trickster tendencies of all three bodies (Mercury-Uranus-Makemake) crystallized at the highest level. What do we make of the trickster archetype, let alone the cosmic trickster Makemake, that it embodies? In “The Esoteric Meaning of the Trickster” by The Alchemist on YouTube, Sarah Elkhaldy breaks down the exalted verses’ detrimental characteristics of this highly misunderstood figure. While the trickster is known most for it’s negatively polarized characteristics, not all cultures paint the trickster with a strictly negative orientation. Rather, as the border-crossers and ‘fallen angels’ of society, the trickster’s role is to blur lines and obliterate boundaries. Characterized by androgyny and shapeshifting abilities, they are a paradigm-shifting agent that often appears in animal forms such as serpents and birds, also honey badgers, ravens and coyotes. Dwelling at the threshold of life and death, magic and logos, the exalted trickster abolishes false divides to restore humanity’s self-sovereignty.
A sacred messenger in a profane cloak, the trickster conveys knowledge and lessons, challenging and catalyzing its audience into higher levels of awareness. On a mission to destroy whatever we have created authority around, the trickster illuminates the opposite – proving it to be equally true. Anywhere there is a boundary that no longer serves our evolution, the trickster shakes up our beliefs to help us call our power back and reclaim self-rulership. Elkhaldy explains that the ‘positive’ or ‘exalted’ trickster (associated with the Fool and Magician of Tarot) manipulates in a conscious, positive manner in order to transmute, provoke and heal. In addition to Makemake, popular Trickster Gods around the world include Shiva (Indian), Loki (Norse), Thoth (Egyptian), Dionysus (Greek), Mercury (Roman), Anansi (West African), The Monkey King (Chinese), Eshu/Elegua (Yoruba), Tezcatlipoca (Aztec), Susanoo-no-Mikoto (Japanese) and Eris (Greek). Operative within a vein where the medicine and the poison become one, the trickster is at work in evolution through deviation, penetrating every divide, calling out oppressive forces, awakening individuals to their blind spots and smashing binary-thinking.
Likewise, given the lateral web of Uranus’ cosmic downloads, shock tactics, and intuitive lightning bolts – if Mercury represents communicating the insights, Makemake provides more meaning and context, and therefore, represents knowledge of the interrelated energetic network understood from an integrated sacred ecology lens. With the potential to afford “devotional focus bordering on genius,” as the higher octave of Uranus, Makemake represents Mercury’s ideas and communications networked into the collective consciousness by Uranus, vivified and contextualized within the culture and context of Earth’s greater spiritual ecosystem. Clay highlights how Makemake “encourages us in the alchemical process of breaking down existing ideas into their component parts and playfully putting them back together in new configurations.” And, informs Clay, if we are doing our spiritual and energetic work, the reward is that the outer planets feel less like ‘happy accidents’ and more like a fortified super-consciousness.

Astrology, like any wisdom tradition, necessitates trusting in and working with the natural forces of life. As in, acknowledging that we are nature, evidenced in the inherent fractal structure of our bodies and environments, where each facet of the whole references all other parts. Interesting how in the Gnostic tradition, all supernatural rulers of the material world are considered trickster figures. In this right, not only does cosmic trickster Makemake reveal the organic structure, her reminds us that the ‘real world’ of which we speak is a phenomenological illusion, a veritable frenzy of incidents and intuitive flashes (Uranus), which we react to and interpret based on our previous conditioning, continually reshaping reality as we go. Likewise, the mythology of Makemake reveals how indigenous traditions never needed a word to ‘distinguish’ nature from culture, nor from man. Just as Makemake’s awareness encompasses the interrelated fractal structure of all reality, indigenous belief systems imbue all life forms – rocks, plants, water and animals – with magical power, force and energy. While it’s certainly a concept historically alien to the Western psyche, the simple acknowledgment that everything is alive (nothing is solid, lifeless or inert) has already been confirmed by contemporary quantum physics.
In his co-written book with Melissa Billington, Clay shares the Sabian Symbol for Makemake’s placement in its discovery chart, further illustrating the dwarf planet’s synergistic effect. Coming into astrological awareness March 31, 2005, the official discovery chart places Makemake at 21° Virgo, Sabian Symbol:
A Girl’s Basketball Team: Physical training as a means to inculcate the feeling of participation in a collective culture
In a breakdown of the intuited symbol’s meaning, we find that the moment of Makemake’s birth into modern astrological awareness happened at a degree of the zodiac symbolizing the operation of teamwork, the formation of a group acting as an organic whole and the training of the team itself to operate within a social context. Just as Makemake is the higher, elevated or spiritual ‘bird’s eye view’ contextualizing the knowledge of Mercury and cosmic ‘innerstanding’ of Uranus, Makemake’s placement at the time of the dwarf planet’s discovery suggests a newborn collective consciousness wherein individuals are increasingly sensitive to one another, in training for dignified group missions and hyper receptive to collective forces.
Given its discovery chart placement in Virgo, Clay and Billington write that this speaks to “seeing the bigger picture in detail,” to the point that every little detail becomes “a valuable, creative resource for our growth.” Among several other aspects in the dwarf planet’s discovery chart, they note a Sun-Venus-Mercury conjunction signifying how Makemake’s inner octave (Mercury) is enmeshed in the planet’s values-driven (Venus) humanitarian vision. Meanwhile, Mercury semisextile Uranus in Pisces infuses our detailed big-picture understanding with intuitive spiritual awareness.
Carefully digesting Makemake’s global impact, they also link Makemake’s discovery event with the launch of YouTube on Valentine’s Day of 2005, reflecting how “YouTube operates as a medium for individual expression,” that is, “available worldwide with the most popular material democratically elevated to the top.” Envisioning the gradual evolution of Mercury (intellect/information) to Uranus (unity in diversity), Makemake’s emergence in tandem with the birth of YouTube levelizes and economizes the cosmic discourse, making the “smallest voice visible and available on the largest level,” writes Clay.

The other publicly launched technological innovation the book links with Makemake’s 2005 discovery is the release of Google Earth, a software that uses satellite imagery to render 3-D hand-held representations of the Earth. Not only has the interactive digital cartography tool been put to use by activists tracking climate change and conservationists observing shifts on a global scale, like the dwarf planet itself, Google Earth allows anyone with a smartphone “the ability to take the big satellite view of our reality, and drill down anywhere to discover finer and finer detail. Each level holds more information, enabling us to collect and curate this data into a rich understanding,” writes Clay.
Now, let’s jump into the mythology of Makemake and the land where these stories initially took root. With his island of origin shrouded in mystery, we cannot isolate Easter Island’s Bird-Man cult from the brutal realities of colonization. While astrology, as of late, has advanced to embrace the names of indigenous creator deities like Polynesian Makemake, this doesn’t make up for the harm done by white supremacist global imperial colonialism and its ongoing practices of genocide and ecocide. As Alison Chester-Lambert of Midlands School of Astrology writes, Makemake coming into greater cultural awareness within Western astrology signals “the close of a 2,000-year cycle and a return to spiritual understanding that reveres nature instead.”
While Makemake was discovered by astronomers 283 years after the European’s conquest of Easter Island, the naming of the dwarf planet after the island’s ‘Great Sea Spirit’ of fertility was the prerogative of astronomer Mike Brown and his team at Caltech. After initially discovering the dwarf planet shortly after Easter Sunday, they began unofficially calling it ‘Easterbunny.’ In a similar twist of fate, Easter Island was likewise named by Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen, who arrived there on Easter Sunday of 1722. As time went on, Mike Brown, whose wife was pregnant at the time, eventually bestowed the dark planet with its current name, Makemake, Bird-chief of Easter Island.
Occupying merely 64 square miles in the South Pacific Ocean, midway between Polynesia and Chile, historians have long questioned how Easter Island became the home to thousands of giant carved rocks and statues, an unparalleled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate folks across the globe. Scholars believe that the creation of the now famous carved rock statues was part of a symbolic system of patronage wrapped up in the stratification of a tribal society delineated as farmers, fishermen, priesthood and royalty. Much of the island’s rock art confirms the sex-positivity of the early islanders, who adorned their boulders with symbols of vulvas and phallic imagery without shame. Why are some sculptures knocked down? Why are some left half-carved? Some say the statues were destroyed by a cataclysmic storm, others by rival clans. Recent evidence suggests that they were actually catacombs built to hold and honor the bones of departed ancestors. Interesting to note that the island also hosts three volcanoes, all situated at a hot spot in the Earth’s crust, which could erupt at any moment.
Before we hungrily swallow more of Makemake’s ancient fertility juju, let’s acknowledge the impact of what Alison Chester-Lambert terms a 19th-century ‘holocaust’ and the breakdown of Easter Island’s previous social order. Not only did tens of thousands die from deadly diseases introduced by the European settlers and their establishment of a slave trade, the introduction of guns destabilized longstanding island hierarchies. Following the initial devastation, legions of missionaries arrived who intended to ‘save’ the remaining islanders by destroying and condemning all living remnants of their spiritual life and traditions. While our remaining knowledge of Makemake and his “Festival of the Seabird`s Eggs” does signal a reawakening in the West to the knowledge of our ancestors’ affinity with nature and the universal web of life, the gaps of history and failure to fully explain the occurrences on the island reveal just how significant the knowledge lost.
To this day, the island is still shrouded with mystery. Take the curious hieroglyphic writing evidenced in a handful of remaining artifacts, but found nowhere else in the world. And the unanswered questions around the lack of fresh water, which at the very least meant islanders had to be ingenious with their farming and organization of planting around the potential for rainfall, in harmony with nature. Modern scholars are still baffled by the thousands of skeletons and empty dwellings, wondering how so many folks could have survived without any source of fresh water.

Prior to the arrival of colonists around the 18th century, the Island was home to 6 or 7 primary clans, which demonstrated both a deep respect for Mother Earth and for their local spirits and ancestral inheritance, writes Chester-Lambert. The native name for Easter Island is Rapa Nui, a Polynesian term meaning ‘Great Rapa,’ a reference to the island’s people and culture. It was also known as “Te Pito O Te Henua” (The Navel of the World), which some link to the relative proximity of South America and its Inca Capital City, called `Navel of the Earth.` Also common to both regions was the tribal stretching of earlobes we observe among today’s punks. Easter Island’s indigenous people, also called Rapa Nui, are descendants of Polynesian settlers who arrived around 300 A.D. While males in particular enjoyed sporting competitions and games of one-upmanship (when not battling over women, territory or honor), Makemake’s annual ‘Festival of the Seabird`s Eggs’ aka the `Bird-man Competition` was the pinnacle of cultural life.
As Chester-Lambert highlights, the emphasis on the Seabird traces back to when ancient Polynesian navigators completed cross-ocean journeys of up to 4,000 miles by following the stars and the migratory paths of Seabirds. Which is why the annual Festival of Eggs is not only named after the Seabird, but also coronates the dawn of the Winter Solstice (June 21st in the southern hemisphere). Solstice was not only a period when the rising Sun aligned with volcanoes at opposite ends of the island, creating a natural ‘Stonehenge,’ but marked the return of the revered Sooty Tern seabird for breeding season. In an annual event merging tests of courage, strength and stamina with a sacred knowledge held exclusively by the priestly and royal castes, the festival took place on a knife-edge cliff between the sea and the crater of a volcano. Conceiving of the Winter Solstice as a spiritual threshold symbolizing rebirth and regeneration, much like the male fertility God Makemake, the festival reflects the Rapa Nui people’s natural attitude toward sexuality. What they understood, writes Chester-Lambert, “to be a pleasurable and truly creative act that celebrated fecundity and the abundance of life.”

Interesting that not only did the ancient Polynesians rely on their sensitivity to nature for survival and follow the movement of the stars committed to memory, the star group known as the Pleiades held a special significance for them. Called the “Seven Sisters,” the V-shaped Pleiades cluster, according to Astrologer Molly McCord, exerts a powerful energetic influence on the inhabitants of Earth. Due to its relative proximity, approx. 444 light-years away from us, McCord distinguishes it as a primary force guiding humanity’s ascension. As an energy system that awakens psychic abilities, the Pleiades star groups’ influence includes opening the heart chakras of humans here on Earth as well as increasing our faculties of empathy, compassion, intuition and telepathy.
As for the occupants of Rapa Nui, the bright Pleiades star group rose before the Sun in the morning during the Winter Solstice and was used in a rain forecasting system that was presumably passed on to Easter Island’s priesthood and seafaring explorers. With their crops dependent on the coming rainfall and planting strategy, the priesthood understood that if the Pleiades looked dim around the Winter Solstice, they would need to adjust their strategy for the coming season. In the names of two lesser-known deities from Polynesian mythology – Makalii or Makarika – we find another clue linking the Pleiades with Makemake. Indeed, the Pleides were long associated with the preeminent Makemake (Makalii or Makarika) in that the star group was referred to as the ‘net’ of this god. Later, Makemake would emerge as the primary creator deity, representing a fusion of earlier dynasties and traditions.
In addition to seabirds, turtles were also regarded as sacred, as evidenced in many rock carvings alluding to their roles as messengers of the Great Seat Spirit Makemake. Like the seabirds that thrived in the area for many years, turtles also travelled thousands of miles to lay eggs on the protected lands of Easter Island. As the focal point of the Makemake cult, as such, every year annually as the Winter Solstice approached, while the seabirds returned to lay their eggs on an offshore islet, men of the island were appointed to run in the race to determine who would be Bird-man. Contestants were illuminated in the dreams of other islanders, who would then appoint a man of lesser status to swim the dangerous race and await the arrival of the birds. Upon collecting their egg, contestants would then swim back with the precious cargo in a reed basket secured to their forehead. They would then climb back up the steep, rocky cliff face and present the egg to their patron. Here, we find that Makemake is not just about brawn and courage, but more so, indicative of the interdependence and teamwork required to win.

A God of competitiveness, Makemake’s chief characteristic was certainly evidenced in the notoriously dangerous race, during which many contestants were killed by drowning, falling from cliffs or eaten by sharks. Notably, a 2008 NewScientist confirmed that the area north of Easter Island has been found to be one of the richest and best places on the Earth for large predatory fish such as marlin, tuna and shark. After being coronated the new ‘Bird-Man,’ the patron would then serve as the cosmic medium between island inhabitants and their god Makemake, living in seclusion for a year within a ceremonial house. The new Bird-Man was not only entitled to precious gifts of food and other goods, but obtained for his clan exclusive rights to collect that season’s harvest of wild bird eggs.
In Clay and Billington’s book, it’s suggested that Makemake could be our first gay deity. Indeed, he is not married, and despite his association with fertility, he has no children. Clay writes that while Makemake is a male creation God, the feminine isn’t absent, but rather, assumed to be omnipresent in the backdrop of all that is. Correlating Makemake’s discovery with the heightened consciousness around gender amongst Gen Z, ultimately, Makemake is a reminder “that everything is an opportunity for creation,” writes Clay. If “Makemake’s fertilization catalyzes new life” within a receptive feminine world, then we can utilize the dwarf planet to illuminate the most “fertile opportunity to manifest our consciousness in the real world,” concludes Clay.
Originally born from a skull belonging to a priestess, Makemake’s myths and Bird-man cult ultimately are an ode to the natural life cycle, particularly the importance of nurturing each part of it. As we learn and relearn to think collectively with the whole Earth ecosystem in mind, Makemake reminds us never to be so shortsighted as to create world structures and consumption patterns at the expense of future generations. As a masculine force of creation, Makemake infuses our lives with spirit, opening our hearts to the reality of collective consciousness and to the flow state that results when we devote ourselves to aligning with the natural rhythms of the Earth.
In a natal chart, Makemake encourages us to understand the context within which we act and create, opening unto a greater cosmic consciousness which diminishes personal ego in favor of the greater needs of humanity and planetary balance. As cosmic trickster, asteroid Makemake encourages us to critically examine the terrarium of our lived experience. The reality is, we all have our own trickster capacity; we just embody it in different ratios depending on our natal chart as a whole.
A rebel and truth-bomber, societal roles that embody the age-old trickster archetype are the comedian, court jester, artist, rapper and African griot. With their truth-telling abilities tied to their position on the borderland and in exile, the trickster engages in playful mockery with healing as the end result. In other words, Makemake encourages us to look at what Afrika Bambataa called the 5th element of hip hop: knowledge of self in community. Not only does the dwarf planet help us illuminate the unique role we play within the larger organic whole (family, school, work, teams) – the more we can harness Makemake’s exalted, righteous playfulness, the more easily we find ourselves not only in the right place at the right time, but able to play our part without shame or hesitation.

Where Makemake shows up in a natal chart, we are ‘fertilizing’ the world with our intentions, ideas and actions. A force of masculine energy and divine trickster associated with will, direction, design and manifestation – Makemake is an archetype concerned chiefly with renewal, creativity and reinvention. By sign and house, Makemake can also illuminate focus, extreme talents, service, devotion, self-assuredness and courage.
A cunning paradigm-shifter, Makemake shows up in our lives in myriad ways. At times, encourages us to be reckless, at others, it shows us how to hide in plain sight or flee to avoid the consequences of our actions. In Clay’s book, we are encouraged to use the dwarf planet’s energy to develop “trust in our reality model and use it to engage with the world, rather than use it as a camouflage to keep us safe from attention.” The goal is to become increasingly part of a larger evolved universe that is learning to work together, cohabitate and share. While the shadow of Makemake can appear as hiding, manipulation, double talk, evasion, selfishness, backbiting or rivalry – Clay insists that the more we make a practice of living, the more we can allow Makemake’s playfulness to be our trusted guide. In others words, rather than simply expressing our utter disdain of traditional ideas, we have to create our own understanding and then we have to “get in our model and drive it around,” continually updating it “based on our life experiences.” Keep in mind our reality model is reinforced by the emotional, physical, and spiritual patterns of daily life, and we can likewise call on the shapeshifting trickster’s playfulness to absolve fear. Whereby soaring through the sky is not an escape route, but an opportunity to soar above the drama. Conscious playfulness, also called wise innocence or beginner’s mind, becomes a method of facing the challenges we encounter each and every day. Ultimately, concludes Clay, “it’s only a failure if we don’t integrate the experience, so that the ‘bad’ outcome doesn’t happen again.”
While astrology continues to discover new dwarf planets, often naming them after indigenous creator Gods, astrologer Maurice Fernandez warns that not only is a lot more time required to assert decisive definitions, our current-day ecological crisis won’t be solved by the West appropriating more land, stories and symbols from those people who did not survive long enough to author their own history. In a subsection of his article about dwarf planets titled, “The Egg Of Creation, and the Threat Of Extinction – A Warning From Makemake,” Fernandez highlights how despite the deity’s reigning title as symbol of male fertility and the nesting of new life, the Rapa Nui population occupying the rich but precarious ecosystem of Easter Island terminated by means of tragic circumstances.
Writing that the Bird-man’s mythology is “entrenched with the existential polarity of new life, sustainability and termination,” Fernandez concludes that ultimately, overpopulation and massive deforestation led to the industrious culture of Easter Island’s demise. Reports state that, over time, Easter Island’s 21 species of trees and all land birds became extinct due to a combination of overharvesting/overhunting, rat predation and climate change. Deforestation collapsed the local fishing industry, which relied on wood for boatbuilding. As the extinction of the seabird population eliminated a crucial food source, Makemake’s promise of collective survival and sustainability became like a distant dream, if not a clear warning to the rest of us. As we revive his myth in the global circuit of astrological wisdom, are we collectively committed to learning from our failures before it’s too late?
According to Fran Arnet of FA Empowerment Astrology, one of Makemake’s superpowers is the “governing of resources in order to achieve a goal/task,” including those incalculable inner resources such as willpower, intellect, heart and psychic abilities. For those of us cultivating and modeling balance between our feminine receptive qualities and masculine warrior-like energy, Makemake in a chart symbolizes how to embody provider/protector strength while remaining in harmony with natural law.
Stephanie Johnson of Seeing With Stars Astrology writes that Makemake is a “collective call to innovation, urging us to reimagine our relationship with the Earth and nurture a more conscious way of living.” Makemake’s position in our birth chart relates to earthly wisdom and spiritual renewal, but the key word is sustainability. Ideally, Makemake enables us to value the resources we have without always asking for more or assuming progress is linear or about growth. In a natal chart, a prominent Makemake might signify exceptional creativity and ‘systems-thinking’ abilities, the capacity to integrate seemingly unrelated ideas and/or a deep understanding of culture and society.
Very much like an inner compass or spiritual GPS, Makemake encourages us to merge inner, nature-based wisdom with outer, ego-driven energy. According to Astrologer Sudhi Saluja of DUASTRO, Makemake has been known to reveal drives, ambitions and unique strengths that may not be immediately visible in a natal chart, guiding individuals to align with their highest potential. Pinpointing where we might “excel with minimal effort,” Makemake can be crucial to stages of higher-level personal development. While positive or ‘soft’ aspects to Makemake can illuminate areas of artistic or professional success, challenging or ‘hard’ aspects encourage reevaluation of one’s priorities and life goals. When Makemake appears in our life as ego conflicts, toxic competitiveness or social tension, we can minimize the dwarf planet’s disruptive energies via mindfulness practices and stress-reduction techniques. Fostering a clarity around life purpose and a desire for social recognition, Makemake ideally sparks meaningful social connections and better relationship management, writes Saluja.
According to Hermes Astrology, Makemake reflects a capacity to bring one’s visions into reality, especially via the use of shamanic energy or spiritual practices. A prominent Makemake placement in a natal chart suggests one is drawn to spirituality and ancient Earth wisdom. Here we find that the dwarf planet’s themes of ‘fertility’ and ‘growth’ vacillate at the physical, metaphysical and ethereal level. As a characteristically masculine force, Makemake is not just about the bringing forth of new ideas and systems logic in resonance with ancestral cultural practices of times past, but finding resilience within the cycles of transformation and renewal. This not only entails becoming more comfortable with the process of change, but recognizing our unique leadership capacity while claiming autonomy within the continuity of relational interdependence.
Alan Clay and Melissa Billington present several case studies highlighting Makemake’s influence in charts of some of the 20th century’s most prominent technology pioneers. Ada Lovelace, the only legitimate child of the renowned poet Lord Byron, had Makemake conjunct her MC, influencing her career and public status. With Makemake supercharging her Midheaven or ‘place in society,’ it’s no coincidence that she would become known for her work drafting the design for the first computer. Calling her “the first computer programmer,” Clay includes some of Ada’s personal commentary in his book, statements which reflect that she self-identified as “preeminently a discoverer of the hidden realities of nature.” Lovelace is also quoted to have said, “That brain of mine is something more than merely mortal; as time will show.”
In another telling case study, Clay and Billington explore the chart of Alan Turing, a British mathematician, cryptologist and philosopher with Makemake conjunct his Ascendant and Mercury in the 2nd house. Not only did his Turing Machine break German code, Alan is credited with formalizing concepts of algorithm and computation. In a chillingly accurate premonition some 80 years ago, Turing predicted, “One day Ladies will take their computers for walks.” Clay’s analysis highlights how in Turing’s chart the dwarf planet’s alignment with Mercury (by sextile) and Uranus (by trine) activating all three octaves in powerful correspondence with the angles.
As for Makemake’s glyph (the symbol identifying its placement in a natal chart), it resembles a face with phallic eyes and nose, modeled after tribal depictions of the Rapa Nui creator God fused with the abstract initial ‘M.’ Given Makemake’s slow pace, in the astro-insights to follow, I have delineated the dwarf planet by house rather than sign. As the house placement shifts more readily, this position offers a better assessment of your personal Makemake blueprint. If you choose to also look up your Makemake by sign, consider the dwarf planet’s energy as a generational influence; for example, everyone born between 1985 and 2012 would have Makemake in Virgo, while anyone born in 2013 or later would have Makemake in Libra.

Makemake in the 2nd *Creator or Consumer?*
Celebrity Doppelgänger: Selena Gomez
In the 2nd house, Makemake influences matters of self-worth, values, earned income and material resources. Finding fulfillment in manifesting abundance that is tied to a larger, meaningful vision, perhaps you’re a finance wizard with an excellent grasp of managing resources and the ability to integrate innovative ideas. Evolving means always knowing you are in the right place at the right time. Notice where you might be neglecting other areas of life in defense of the bottom line. With a sacred and devotional focus rooted in intuition, you are reshaping your personal reality to contribute to a more sustainable, spiritually nourishing world. As you learn from experience, Makemake helps you achieve a comfortable life without falling prey to rampant materialism or the destruction of the Earth. Adopting the spiritual path of enlightened detachment, it is time to reevaluate what ‘security’ and ‘wealth’ mean to you now, seeking out projects and causes that align with your ideals. Rather than assuming your wealth equals your worth, you’re developing a personal value system which honors authenticity, sustainability and a deeper connection with the natural world. The more you come into alignment with your higher values, the more abundance flows. Whether generating something out of nothing, or cultivating new skill sets to combat scarcity mentality, you reincarnated to show others that true wealth entails resourcefulness and harmony with the environment; that sustaining what we already have has more value than anything we might consume. Rx: Empress Cycle Harmony
By integrating your unique values into the broader social sphere, this placement encourages a more holistic, responsible approach to personal wealth. Weaving Makemake’s creative, innovative and ecologically-focused energies into your realm of values and self-worth, the 2nd House is where you discover what you truly treasure. And when it comes to the Venus-ruled house of the Empress, you can’t understate the value of cycle harmony. As the saying goes, your health is your wealth! Introducing Empress Cycle Harmony, the herbal supplement supporting optimal conditions for menstruation – including regulating PMS, irregular periods, menstrual cramps, fatigue, mood swings and skin health. Rooted in centuries of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this innovative formula addresses the underlying cause of women’s hormonal imbalances, helping restore energy, mood stability and overall vitality the natural way.

Aligning exquisitely with Makemake’s emphasis on fertility and creative flow, Empress Cycle Harmony is designed for women who menstruate. Restoring balance via cinnamon bark, poria cocos root, angelica gigas nakai, cnidium root, white peony root, water plantain root, atractylodes root, and peach kemel – just two capsules a day regenerates skin health and targets low libido, fatigue, hormonal breakouts and other symptoms of PMS. Founded by a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, Empress began with the coming of the founder’s daughter’s first period. It was a moment that inspired her to create “something that could help her, and help all of us, feel more held through these transitions,” says Sheena Jongeneel, L.Ac., a pioneer of women’s natural health who has spent the past 15 years treating women using Eastern medicine. As a rare feminine wellness brand serving women from menarche to menopause, Empress leaves out no stage of a woman’s reproductive life. For those entering perimenopause, the brand offers Peri Peace, an all-in-one supplement designed to support balanced hormones, mood stability, sexual wellness, skin health and vitality. And if that were not enough, my shipment came with a little jar of raw Schisandra berries. Hailed as the ‘Five Flavor berry.’ Schisandra berries are a cherished herb in Eastern medicine bringing together all five flavors – sour, sweet, bitter, salty and pungent – symbolic of the ability to nourish the body at all levels. A natural adaptogen, the berries can be added to sparkling water or a cup of tea to support cycle regularity and liver detox, while also enhancing skin radiance, natural energy and clarity.

In the fertile 5th house realm of art, romance, children, performance, sports, gambling and ultra play, Makemake imbues those areas of life with a sense of originality and purpose. A natural innovator and prioritizer of play, engaging in the act of creation helps you awaken others to the beauty and potential of life itself.
Rx: Radiance Root Navel Oil
In the house of fixed fire, a profound respect for Gaia makes you intuitively attuned to natural law. While the Leonine 5th house is often associated with the heart chakra, with its planetary rulership assigned to the Sun, it can just as easily correspond to the navel chakra, also known as the solar plexus or inner sun. In the tradition of yogic science called Ayurveda, this is not just where we digest food, but also where we digest everything we take in from our environment, be it media, toxins in the air, or other people’s emotions. Traditionally correlated with boundary work, the solar plexus activates our masculine solar purpose. Take it from a long-time yogi: Radiance Root Navel Oil is so much more than just another exotic over-the-counter quick fix. Radiance Root Navel Oil by Chasma is a daily ritual designed to restore balance to body, mind and skin. I’ve been using it following my yoga practice before savanna. You can also apply 2–3 drops before bed, starting from your belly button and gently massaging your navel in circular motion for 1–2 minutes. Crafted with a nourishing blend of cold-pressed oils and potent botanicals, it’s a nature-made luxury that supports skin glow, healthy digestion and emotional grounding in one. Your path to natural beauty, Radiance Root Navel Oil is crafted with love from organic ingredients and made in small batches. Vegan, cruelty-free & gentle enough for sensitive skin – this isn’t ordinary self-care.

A mindful skincare collection rooted in purity and intention, Chasma was founded by Mangala Rao. Guided by ancient eastern philosophies and plant-forward ingredients, Rao created her company after discovering firsthand how her “skin struggles weren’t just about the products [she] was using—they were about what was hidden inside them.” It wasn’t until she immersed herself in Ayurveda that Rao began to understand the enduring power of pure, plant-based medicine. Not only did her journey lead to creating Chasma’s chemical and additive-free array of body and hair oils, it revived her to a myriad of ancient yogic wisdom. That is, timeless, simple at-home remedies modern science is only beginning to understand. Who says you need another probiotic to alleviate common digestive issues like bloating, constipation and indigestion? When it comes to ancient wisdom, less is more. Sometimes it really is as simple as presence, warmth and the intention of self-love. Oiling the navel, a technique rooted in Ayurvedic medicine, offers a variety of health benefits, from improving skin texture to enhancing digestion and relieving pain. Not only does applying fragrant oils to the navel ensure optimum absorption of nutrients, leading to softer and glowing skin – if the warming scent of turmeric, saffron, vetiver, orange and frankincense doesn’t transport you to a state of blissful sanctuary, I’m not sure what will. Added ricinoleic acid and castor oil increases the secretion of digestive enzymes, aiding in the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients. Click below to treat your inner sun.
