Like most of us, I made a New Year’s Resolution to get in better shape. The only problem is that I don’t always feel motivated to go to the gym. I know that I need to go, but some days my brain just says nah, I’m not feeling it today.
To alleviate this feeling, I’ve been searching for different types of workouts beyond the gym. That’s how I discovered Activate.
Activate is a gaming facility featuring interactive technology. Essentially, you and your friends/family pick a room and select a game, such as shooting hoops. You select the level of the game and enter the room. The game begins, and you have one to two minutes to play. Trying to shoot as many hoops as possible in a one-minute time frame definitely gets your heart pumping!
I took my husband with me to check out the Activate in Culver City. There are three Activates in the southern California area, but Activates are open all over the world (and they’re growing!) When we arrived, we were given wristbands to access a locker, open the different game rooms, and keep track of our score. We dropped off our bags and began our 90 minute adventure (Activate offers blocks of 30, 60, or 90 minutes at various prices).
We had a blast playing the different games. There are 700 different types of games across multiple rooms. We didn’t have the time nor the energy to try everything, but we did as many as we could. Our favorites included various hoop-shooting games, usually against each other, throwing balls and video asteroids that exploded, dodging lasers, and running from colored square to colored square. Some of the games are more of a brain workout, like memorizing different patterns and recreating them, while others are more physical. We preferred the physical ones and loved feeling like kids again dashing from room to room.
Speaking of kids, we saw lots of families and little ones at Activate. The facility is ideal for kids as it’s not too big, it’s safe, and kids can get all their energy out. So if you have wee ones, bring them along to Activate. You’ll both get workouts in.
By the end of our adventure, we were both sweating and had burned off our lunch. When I think about Activate, my brain doesn’t say nah. It says, “yeah, let’s go again!”
