If you’re anything like me, the best outfits are those injected with a mix of whimsy and timeless elegance. But my attempts to create these looks are often stymied by a range of factors, from a lack of durability or availability to materials inappropriate for the California heat.
In the end, I continue cycling through the same shorts, tank tops, polyester skirts and cotton-blend dresses I’ve always worn, spending more time daydreaming about my personal style than I do wearing it. But what if this didn’t have to be the case? What if there were a place to easily find and purchase unique, high-quality, well-fitting, vintage-inspired clothing meant to last for years to come, with options for all sorts of style and climate preferences?
As it turns out, there is. Enter Son de Flor, a popular purveyor of 100% linen garments and the founder of their own modern linen-loving community. The brand saw its start in 2016, when Lithuanian-born Vaida and Indr? decided they wanted to stop chasing fashion trends and start dedicating themselves to sustainability. Their first creation was their name—“Son de Flor,” or “sound of flower.” Beautiful and distinctive, the name connects to the company’s mission—creating clothing from 100% linen, a material derived from the flowering flax plant. Next, the co-founders developed their first piece of clothing, the company’s well-loved Classic Dress with its Peter Pan collar, officially launching their company.
Dozens of new designs followed from here, as the company produced everything from skirts to pants to sweaters to dresses. Today, Son de Flor continues to expand their offerings, crafting pieces for every fit proclivity and occasion. They even offer durable and stylish table linens for those looking for a special touch for their dining rooms. My favorite piece, however, is their Classic Skirt in Night Navy. Stretching just past my knees, this circle skirt is flowy, fabulous, and heavy enough to stand on its own, without the use of a petticoat. It can be easily styled up or down, working just as well with a fashionable blouse as it does a tank top. And the best part? Why, the expansive pockets, of course!
The breathable linen of the Classic Skirt also ensures it’s comfortable even on hot days, something which surprised me given the weight of the material. And the loose weave of this natural fabric is only one of its many benefits. Son de Flor’s linen, as well as materials including yarn and buttons, is locally produced, reducing the company’s carbon footprint. Their textiles are also Oeko-Tex certified, affirming that none of their pieces contain any harmful substances or chemicals.
Plus, to reduce waste, the production of most of the company’s offerings is based on demand. Any leftover garments are sent to creatives with whom Son de Flor has built relationships, ensuring the linen will be used for other projects. And in the event a customer feels their linen dress is no longer to their liking, the company’s pre-loved initiative allows them to ship their garment back at no cost, where it will be given a second life.
How else does the company practice sustainability? The answer lies in their shipping materials. Each order is packed in a cardboard box, where it is tied with twine and wrapped in colorful—and recyclable—paper. Each package also includes a linen sample and an extra button, allowing customers to make any needed repairs to their garment with ease. Plastic is almost entirely avoided, only being used in the envelope that holds the shipping label to the exterior of the box.
When it comes to cozy, timeless pieces, there’s no company better than Son de Flor. Over the years, Vaida and Indr? have turned their business into the center of a linen-loving community, where the name Son de Flor is well-known and well-loved. And that community has only continued to grow, leading to an increase in products and collaborations that have given us so much more to admire from this unique business.
