Plastic pollution has become one of the most urgent issues in the fight for the protection of the environment. Plastic waste is polluting oceans, clogging rivers and streams, killing wildlife, and even infiltrating our food supply and bodies. Experts predict that if we go on this way, by 2050 the world will have 12 billion metric tons of plastic waste in its landfills. The cosmetic industry is one of the biggest users of plastic with its reliance on plastic containers, jars, tubes, and elaborate packaging but some new companies are taking steps to make packaging sustainable.
To celebrate Plastic Free July, we would like to introduce you to a new skincare brand Spectacle Skincare which has replaced all plastic parts in its packaging (except for the airless pump, but they are working on replacing that part too).
Spectacle Performance Crème was co-founded by Olivia Falcon, former beauty editor of British Vogue, and Andre Condit, a former Ford model. This science-backed, efficacious moisturizer will not only heal the driest, withered skin, but remedy inflammation and make any drab complexion glow. Ingredients include oleosomes (nutrients that start life in the seed), gallic acid (a polyphenol issued from green biotechnology, which protects the skin from inflammation), retinol, copper amino acids, bio-fermented squalane, and a complex of collagen-boosting peptides. The line also uses the most advanced environmentally sustainable packaging you will find.
The Spectacle Moisturizer is contained in an eco- and cosmos-certified tube, constructed from a spruce-wood and sugarcane compound. Over 95% of the materials used in the tube are from renewable resources. No trees were harmed in the creation of the containers as the wood used is from discarded sawdust used by German carpenters. The wood tube has a carbon footprint that is 40% better than a conventional PE tube. Likewise, no trees were harmed in the creation of the box, since it was created out of acid, chlorine and chemical-free hemp paper; 50% of the fibre is sustainably sourced from European hemp fields, the remaining 50% from post-consumer recycled waste. For every box created, the creators of Spectacle plant two hemp seeds. For every 154 boxes made from hemp, 16 lbs of trees are saved, 20 gallons of water are conserved, 36,000 BTUs of energy not wasted and 4.5 lbs of greenhouse gases are kept out of the environment.
The soy ink used has low levels of volatile organic compounds, far less than the amount produced by petroleum-based inks. Soy ink is a wonderful choice also because it is almost five times more biodegradable than standard ink.
