I don’t know about your family, but every year, someone in mine suggests, with the best intentions of course, that we attempt to do a giftless Christmas. At the very least, we always discuss capping the gift amount at some economical number or simply doing a white elephant game. And every year without fail, we spend and spend and spend only to end up with a bigger pile of presents than the prior year. It being BLACK FRIDAY and all, boycotts notwithstanding, we all know the clock is ticking! Feeling ready for the holidaze? Depending on the person, I know that present shopping inspires a range of feelings from excitement, to warmth of heart to disgust, anxiety and overwhelm.
Do the gifts make Christmas, or do we need to strip away all the rampant commercialism to get back to the heart and soul of the holidays? Is it really the thought that counts, or are gifts a subtle currency emblazoned in memory? Like an endless game of chess, we’re always keeping score, determining the value of our relationships in a scheme of reward and punishment. Are the best gifts emotional, functional, thoughtful or all of the above? Why do we give at all?
Some sources claim that originally, gifting was tied to New Year’s Eve, and that only over time did it shift into a tradition associated with Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Others have said that gift giving originally coincided with the Winter Solstice – a time of reflection, renewal and rebirth, symbolizing the end of the longest night and the return of light. Pre-Christianity, gift-giving was the custom associated with the pagan festival of Saturnalia, an ancient Roman tradition honoring the god of agriculture, Saturn, celebrated with feasting, gift-giving, and the temporary subversion of social norms. Saturnalia typically lasted for up to a week beginning in mid-December. If you’re looking to mix it up at this year’s gathering, consider that during the original Saturnalia festival, social roles were reversed (including masters serving slaves), a lord of misrule was appointed and people would wear what was called a pileus hat to symbolize freedom and equality.
My point is, much of the commercialization of the holidays we know and question today didn’t begin until the Victorian era, growing to its full, climactic and frequently (wasteful!) proportions as late as the 20th century, when corporate businesses began to heavily encourage gift giving. In my family, at the very least, it still feels like the most egalitarian way to connect that doesn’t involve eating (although we do a lot of that) or screen time. I also want to shout out to all of the local, intentional, eco-conscious brands we work with at Beauty News NYC, where we know that quality is as important as intentionality and ethics when it comes to consumption. As you read on to learn about some of my favorite holiday gifts of the season, I want to discourage a culture of less judgment and ‘holier than thou’ assumptions when it comes to spending. Where we spend our money matters. Perhaps you’ll consider commissioning a local artisan or prioritizing buying from women- or minority-owned businesses this year. It takes everyone to make a difference in this world, and we can all give in different capacities.
Because I personally find it most difficult to buy for the men in my life (probably because they have everything I could reasonably afford), I catered this list to appeal to the more masculine end of the spectrum, and I learned a lot along the way.
