Curly hair gets allllll the love here on Beauty News NYC. I’ve been writing about curly hair for years (as seen with my reviews of BREAD BEAUTY, CurlSmith, and visit to Holistic Hair Studio to pamper my natural hair), so it’s a given that I adore my afro since I did my big chop almost nine years ago. There is a deep joy and security in having my beautiful big hair and that’s why I decided to change it up. I went online and discovered a small business owner, Toni Pressley, of founder of Hairapy Studio XCV to transform my look this season with a Boho Bob Knotless hairstyle. Keep reading to discover my experience
What is a Boho Bob Knotless Hairstyle?
The Boho Bob Knotless hairstyle is a short and sweet take on the traditional boho braids. The curly pieces of hair are intertwined into knotless braids which give a whimsical touch to the style. It’s a great summer style to rock whether styled in pigtails or free flowing down your back.
My Experience at Hairapy Studio XCV
Welcome Wash
I arrived to the building and was greeted by stylist Toni Pressley. Toni guided me to her chair in cute studio which had a sink for washing, stylist chair, and shopping shelf for hair goodies. Toni began my experience by dimming the lights and playing soothing classical tunes as we went over to the hair sink. Once I took a seat, Toni turned on a hair steamer to aid in opening up my hair cuticles while she shampooed and conditioned my hair. Her hands felt heavenly as she scrubbed my scalp and detangled my hair to prep for the styling.
Into the Style
Once Toni finished washing my hair she brought me to her chair to blow dry my curls. The process was fast and easy as she gently ran the dryer through my hair. At the end my hair was stretched and ready to braid.
Next, Toni confirmed the color I wanted for my hair. I decided on a red and orange mix to try out a ginger color way this spring. I sat back as Toni began sectioning, twisting, and braiding my hairs. Once most of my braids were in, she added curly pieces of hair into the braids for the boho effect. The process was fairly short, about five hours, to complete the look.
The results were so cute with the curls framing my face and the braids adding volume to my style. Toni truly worked her magic in doing my boho bob.
Q + A:
From Toni Pressley founder of Hairapy Studio XCV:
Hairapy Studio XCV isn’t just a salon; it’s a healing space. We are a regimen-based salon focused on healthy hair routines, hair loss solutions, and creating a low-sensory, relaxing environment for our clients. Our goal is to provide not just a style, but an experience—where your hair care journey supports your overall well-being.
What is your history with hair?
My journey with hair started as a young girl, doing my own hair and friends’ hair in my neighborhood. Over the years, I’ve developed a true passion for understanding hair care science and using it to help others restore their confidence. My work in psychology has shown me how deeply personal and emotional hair can be, especially for those experiencing hair loss, trauma, or self-esteem issues.
The idea behind the name of your salon?
The name Hairapy Studio XCV is a fusion of hair and therapy, reflecting both my professional background and personal mission. “XCV” represents the year I was born—1995—and signifies how my life’s journey has shaped this safe space for transformation, healing, and empowerment through hair care.
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty, to me, is authenticity. It’s the freedom to show up as your full self—flaws, edges, curls, coils, and all. It’s about taking care of yourself, inside and out, and embracing every stage of your journey.
This season’s trendiest hairstyle?
This season, we’re seeing a lot of love for boho knotless braids and natural silk presses with trims. Clients are leaning into protective styles and healthy, low-maintenance looks that still turn heads.
Where do you see your business growing in the next year?
Within the next year, I plan to expand Hairapy Studio XCV’s Healthy Hair on a Budget program, grow our 1-on-1 educational classes, and launch new products tailored for scalp health and moisture retention. I also hope to partner with local mental health advocates to provide self-care sessions for clients who need more than just a hairstyle.
What advice would you give fellow hair stylists who are looking to create their own business?
To fellow stylists wanting to start their own business: Start with purpose. Know who you want to serve, why it matters, and how your unique story makes you the right person for the mission. Build with intention, not just for income but for impact.
