Unboxing My Exotic Fruit Journey

Read about my fruity food journey, sampling exotic fruits I’d never tried before and a recipe I whipped up using the Taste the Exotics fruit box’s recipe cards.

Cherimoya from Chile and Rambutan from Costa Rica were two of the various fruits that tantalized my tastebuds after I’d embarked on a wildly flavorful  adventure, sampling the eight exotic fruits and Desbry Chips Malanga w/lime that were included in Tropical Fruit Box’s Taste the Exotics subscription fruit box. Cards featuring information along with recipes were included in the box. Where did the fruit hail from? The curated offering was obtained from a variety of small farms located in Florida, Central America, South America, and Asia.

Sampling fruits of varied textures, shapes, and flavors was an eye-opening adventure. There were quite a few new discoveries  I will welcome into my pantry again and again. Ditto for the Desbry Chips Malanga with lime. Those crunchy chips are highly addictive!

The scary-looking fruit pictured here is Rambutan, a fruit originating in Guatemala and Costa Rica. I am planning to make a coconut milk, banana, and Rambutan smoothie using the recipe card included in the fruit box. Photo Credit: Rachelle Nones

A Cool, Sweet Taste of the Tropics

With summer just around the corner, I decided to use the bagful of Cherimoya fruit to whip up the Cherimoya Ice Cream recipe printed on one of the recipe cards in the box. It was super-easy to make and quite refreshing. To make the ice cream, I scooped the soft flesh of the cherimoya (after removing the pits) into my coffee grinder to whirl the fruit into a paste.  I then placed the paste upon a plastic plate and placed it in the freezer. The next day, I broke up the frozen cherimoya by hand and placed the frozen pieces into my coffee grinder and added a tablespoon of water to the mixture a little at a time. When it resembled ice cream, I scooped it into a serving bowl and enjoyed dining on my homemade Cherimoya Ice Cream. The delicate, sweet taste of the ice cream  tasted great on its own and even better when topped with fresh strawberries and a dallop of whipped cream or a dash of maple syrup.

The Verdict?

I thoroughly enjoyed sampling fresh and healthy uncommon fruit varieties that I don’t typically find at the local supermarket. The Taste the Exotics fruit box makes an ideal all-occasion gift for just about anybody, especially fruit lovers or adventurous foodies seeking to sample a wide variety of exceptional exotic fruit.
