If you’re looking for an after-work place to celebrate, dine, or to simply unwind, head to one of La Pulperia’s three NYC locations (1626 Second Ave in Yorkville, midtown east at 57th Street, and West 46th Street). La Pulperia’s combination of excellent Pan-Latin cuisine, rustic-chic décor, and cocktail-conviviality ensure that it’s ideal for parties, casual meetings, and lively get-togethers.
Chef/Owner Carlos Barroz and Victor Medina named La Pulperia after the general stores in South America, and feature cuisine from the countries of Latin America with influences from Italy and Spain. The restaurants’ interiors were designed by Andres Gomez (Red Rooster, Whitehall, SoCo) and reflect the authenticity of pulperias, with handcrafted floor tiles from Mexico, and reclaimed Brazilian wood.
Starters include El Guacamole with cotija cheese for a flavorful, protein-packed twist, as well as Lobster Taquitos, Lobster & Baked Egg, and Queso Fundido with Spanish corizo and Chihuahua cheese. Savor something from the Raw Bar, such as Ceviche Mixto with an array of seafood, or El Salmon Brulee (Verlasso Salmon tartar). The soup and salads soothe the soul: Chicken Noodle Soup is graced with a poached egg and Aji Amarillo for a unique twist, and the Grilled Caesar Salad (below) is incredible – it has a grilled flavor combined with Caesar dressing, anchovy salt, and Dominican fried cheese for a salad experience you’ll love.
Seafood abounds here, with offerings from chef Carkis Barroz that include Oyster Shooters, Pacu Fish Ribs, Alaskan King Crab Leg, Maine Lobster, Verlasso Salmon, Octopus, Moqueca Mixta (squid, mussels, shrimp, white fish, scallops, and more). If you’re not in the mood for seafood, opt for Hangar Steak, Boneless Organic Chicken Breast, or Argentinian BBQ for two. Sides are inventive: Russian Potato Salad, Coconut Rice, French Fries, Grilled Broccoli Rabe, and Eggplant Chambota. Celery Root Gratin is unusual and superb, and Chimichurri sauce can be requested, too. There are Vegetarian and Gluten-free options on the menu to please everyone.
Definitely save room for dessert at La Pulperia! You’ll want to sample the Mango & Lychee Tres Leches Cake, which is moist and capped with a coconut & sake soak. Also remarkable are the Flan Napolitano, Crepas, Spice Chocolate Mousse, and Churro Bittes.
Cocktails are great here, too – whether you’re in the mood for an Espresso Martini, traditional Margarita, or something more exotic such as Coquito Passion with Don Q Silver, coconut rum, passion fruit puree and fresh mint.
