If you love Broadway belters, inspired costume design, humor, pathos, a solid lineup of memorable songs, learning about hsitory, and a cast that gives it all to their performances, then SIX on Broadway is for you.
Part pop music show, Las Vegas act, and engaging history lesson, SIX features all of Henry V111’s woeful six wives in glittering Tudor-style outfits as they tell a tale of their own demise or survival, with some having been fated for an old-fashioned beheading. Designed to prompt the audience to choose favorites and then to reconsider the entire story line, these six women bringing historical tales to life are all-heart and talent.
The six ex-wives are Catherine of Aragon (Najah Hetsberger), Anne Boleyn (Gianna Yanelli), Jane Seymour (Kelsie Watts), Anna of Cleves (Krystal Hernandez), Katherine Howard (Kay Sibal), and Catherine Parr (Taylor Marie Daniel). Written by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, they garnered a Best Score Tony Award in 2022 for SIX.
The choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille must be lauded, since it’s no easy feat to move six women around on a stage seamlessly and with style, in varying poses. What I appreciated most about the story line was the fact that each woman had her own unique take on her experience as the Queen, and her own distinctive personality.
Not entirely child-friendly, nevertheless there are children in the audience, and mostly girls – since the show is a tribute to the strength of women. The grand finale is fabulous and Broadway-worthy, and the Lena Horne Theatre is truly eye-popping, with thoughtful architectural details and decor accents. Score some elevated box seats to the side of the stage if you can for a magnificent view, and pick up some SIX merch for the girls in your life. Nine original songs set this historic tale to incredible music, and renders this one of those shows that you can see multiple times.
