Every product she makes has been diligently crafted with innovation and love. Each artisanal bomb tells its own story and bath time is much more fun! I had the privilege to sit down with Spruill to hear more about Honeycat Cosmetics and how it all began.
Thank you so much for joining us! Please tell us about your background and why you chose this career path.
I actually didn’t initially choose this career. Alas, I was a slave to corporate America until I became so fed up and burned out, I simply had to leave. For my sanity, I had to leave. I grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, (yeah Brooklyn in the house). The motto there was, “Bed-Stuy Do or Die.” I decided a long time ago, that I was going to be a “Doer.” Did the whole college thing, corporate America…just wasn’t my scene.
What was the motivation to start Honeycat Cosmetics and what is the significance behind the brand’s name?
Well now, that might be a little bit sugary. Honeycat is the nickname that my husband calls me… I know, I know, break out the insulin. I’ve always been a bit of a “bath-o-holic” so one day, my husband and I were shopping in a popular makeup store and he rather flippantly said, “You’re always buying other people’s stuff, why not make your own?” That, really, was all that I needed. Like so many others, I started in my kitchen, using my husband as a tester. That is, until some of his colleagues kidded him and said he “smelled lovely.” I would give out small samples to colleagues and friends and things just caught on from there.
What does Honeycat Cosmetics offer, and could you tell us about your top selling products?
When we first started, we were offering body creams, lotions, shower gels, you know – like everyone else – but anyone who knows me knows that I’m not big on conformity. I’m an out-of-the-box thinker. I love bath bombs, but I didn’t just want to create round bath bombs, or plain bath bombs. I mean, think about it. We pay about $5.00 for the average large bath bomb, you toss it into the water and …that’s it. I wanted to build a better mouse trap so we created our 2-in-1 artisanal bath bombs with soap topper. With a Honeycat bath bomb, long after the fizz has fizzed, there is still a lightly scented, whimsically designed soap topper. Truth be told, we are now concentrating on our bath bombs and 3-D soy candles. Our top selling products are: PurrMaid/Mermaid Sea Salt and orchid scented bath bomb, New Mommy oatmeal, milk-and-honey scented bath bomb, Bastet Beauty bath bomb, all of our martini candles and our Rub My Tummy milk-and-honey scented body cream.
Your designs are so unique. Where do you get your inspiration for your products?
Oh gosh, inspiration is everywhere! I watch the Food Network for scent inspiration. I cannot cook a lick, but I still watch. I’m a good listener and sometimes I get snippets of conversations. Sometimes thoughts just pop into my head.
What is it about bath bombs that make them so attractive and calming?
I think it’s a combination of things. Sometimes a particular sent, Epsom salt in some cases, and let’s face it – they are fun! We all could use a little fun, don’t you think? Many clients have written to us that they were “hardcore shower takers.” However, after using our bath bombs they find joy in taking a bath.
How does Honeycat Cosmetics stand out from other collections?
We like to think of ourselves as square (bath bomb) pegs in a sea of round (bath bomb) holes. We try to make each of our bath bombs a mini work of art.
Just for fun: who would you would like to have breakfast or lunch with and why?
Wow, this is a hard one. There are so many (mostly long dead people), but let’s see… Someone living. There is a New Thought teacher, Doctor Joe Dispenza. He is helping to change lives; he certainly helped to change mine. He taught me how to take my life out of survival mode, slow down, meditate and listen. All the answers we seek are already inside us. We just have to listen and believe me, that is not easy, but it can be done.
Anything else you would like our readers to know?
Honeycat Cosmetics are huge cat fans! We donate regularly to various cat sanctuaries, rescues and TNR (Trap Neuter Return) groups. We also give back to organizations that help and support battered women, breast cancer awareness organizations, and basically any organization helping our furry friends. Most of the staff here are vegetarian or Vegan so, we really will not use any harmful ingredients in our products.
