Welcome to the vanilla era – it’s been ongoing for a while, but the season where this note shines most brightly is upon us. The versatility of vanilla is astounding – from earthy pods to boozy bourbon to rich extract, this one accord has many faces and moods. Here are five irresistible vanilla-forward scents to enjoy this fall.
Lavanila’s Pure Vanilla is a true hidden gem within the fragrance world; at only $52, it’s the least expensive on this list, but one of my personal favorites. Known for producing healthy fragrances, the brand uses only the purest, natural and organic ingredients and no harsh chemicals. Pure Vanilla is the quintessential autumn vanilla to me: a spicy, natural-smelling profile that doesn’t smell like dessert. The tonka bean adds a subtle nuttiness, and I am reminded of a steaming cup of milky chai when I wear this. It’s utterly divine.
YSL just came out with a new flanker of their Libre line, Libre Vanille Couture. This was love at first sniff for me, an expertly crafted version of a beloved scent that highlights bourbon vanilla caviar from Madagascar. Whether you’re a fan of the original or not (an addictive concoction of orange blossom, lavender, and musk), this scent is a knockout that smells like opulence in a bottle. Dressed in metallic gold, this fragrance is an ode to feminine sensuality and captivation.
If you’re in search of the perfect woody vanilla, you must get your nose on Vanilla Mistral by Ormonde Jayne. This sold out immediately but is currently available on backorder at Neiman Marcus (because it’s that good). Pistachio, cardamom, black pepper, violet, fig, and vetiver accompany the star of the show, a green, fragrant and smooth vanilla that is perfectly unisex. This is not your sugary vanilla – it’s an elevated, luxurious take on a popular note that lovers of the minimalist or clean girl aesthetic will adore. I had the pleasure of meeting Ormonde Jayne founder Linda Pilkington in person to try this one, and she is a true delight. We chatted about everything from cats to ice cream to gardening, and it couldn’t have been more of a pleasure to experience this new scent with her.
Aerin has treated us to another vanilla flanker: Amber Musk Vanille. The original Amber Musk, which I’ve reviewed here, is a cult-favorite, and this has that beloved DNA with an added dose of whipped vanilla and marshmallow. It feels like a soft and cozy blanket, enveloping the senses in its comforting embrace. It’s a perfume for those who don’t like perfume – never loud or cloying, it’s soft and sensual, yet projects well throughout the day. Wear this at your next campfire for maximum snugness.
I’ve saved my favorite for last, the vanilla to end all vanillas: Guerlain’s Vanille Planifolia Extrait 21. Smelling this is a spiritual experience; you get a whiff of the richest, most sumptuous hit of creamy vanilla at the opening, which then meanders into a territory of spices and musk. The house of Guerlain is known for its vanillas (vanilla planifolia must be cold-soaked in alcohol for 21 days, in a signature hand-performed technique), and this one showcases the brand’s artistry beautifully. If you have smelled Spiritueuse Double Vanille by the brand (another favorite of mine), this one is less boozy, a bit louder, and a whole lot creamier. It also lasts forever on skin. Spiced, ambery, and indulgent, it’s heaven on earth for the vanilla lover.
