“Sappho, who broke off a fragment of her soul for us to guess at.”
~ Bliss Carmen
Sappho, named for the lauded Greek lesbian poetess, is a planetary body discovered in 1864. Orbiting the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, Sappho circles the sun approximately every 3.5 years. Larger than 99% of asteroids at roughly the size of Rhode Island, some astrologers consider Sappho like an intermediary in the octave progression linking Venus (romantic love) and Neptune (unconditional love). In a natal chart, Sappho is symbolic of aesthetic refinement and poetic sensibility, emotional extremes in love and sexuality, friendship needs, partnerships fueled by romantic and artistic sensitivity and same-sex bonds exceeding ordinary friendship. With the natal placement of Sappho at birth highlighting how and what you share in close relationship, Sappho is credited with sensitizing individuals to the emotions they bring to the sexual act. By signs and house, Sappho likewise highlights creative aptitude, particularly the interstice where femininity, libido and the sensual nature of words cohere in lyric poetry.
Associated with the translation of emotions via art, Sappho’s placement in a natal chart reveals the inherent value one places on the emotional and aesthetic aspects of partnership. Highlighting the importance of bonds between women, the asteroid can refer to companionship as much as sensuous feelings and lust. As an archetype inherently open to otherness, Sappho’s meaning seemingly bends to the times, as if lilting on a gentle breeze. Astrologically, Sappho reflects an individual’s approach to love, including the emotional feeling world, the appreciation of beauty and courtship, and the expression of desires with utmost poetic license. A prominent Sappho might indicate a gift for eloquent and emotionally charged speech or writing encompassing the full spectrum of love’s themes, include feelings of pain, rejection, jealousy, projection and other potentially toxic, inherited relationship patterns.

As the servant of Aphrodite, Sappho was most intimate with the Love Goddess. In many ways, Aphrodite with Sappho’s muse, inspiring poems about flowers and plant whisperers, beauty rituals, perfumed ointments, healing baths and sisterhood. In ODE TO APHRODITE, Sappho begs the Love Goddess to “Slay thou my Spirit!” To which she responds, in a poem titled APHRODITE’S PRAISE:
O Sappho, why art thou ever
Singing with praises the blessed
Queen of heaven?
Why does the heart in thy bosom
Ever revert to its hearing
Throb to the Goddess?
Why are thy senses unsated
Ever in quest of elusive
Love that is deathless?
Thou art the crisis of rapture
Relaxing my limbs, and the melting
Ebb of emotions
Known by most as the original Greek Poetess and by many others as a ‘seductress’, Sappho dwelled on the island of Lesbos in the 6th century BC, composing love poetry and lyrical verse while presiding over a Fine Arts academy for women. Described as insanely intelligent and unwavering in her authentic feminine expression, in addition to her schooling of girls in the Fine Arts, she was also known to have educated them in the realms of grace, love and marriage. So admired by the culture at large, Sappho is also often referred to as the ‘Tenth Muse’ of Greek mythology.
In one of her few remaining poems, addressed once again to the Love Goddess Aphrodite, Sappho writes, “Less delicate a rose, than flesh of thine.” In another poem, this one in praise of ANAVICTORIA, Sappho writes, “Subtle under my skin runs fire ecstatic” and “Melt her mood to mine with amorous touches, til her low assent and her sigh’s abandon, Lure me to Rapture.” Denoted in a natal chart as a glyph representative of two Venuses united, Sappho is known for evoking rapturous intimacy, feelings of yearning as well as desolation, jealousy and obsession. Calling Sappho “A genius and rare flower in her own time,” Jewel Mayberry of ASTRO Garden writes that she was often depicted in open flowing robes, unashamed and comfortable in her own skin. “The act of displaying one’s true sexual character is an element of Sappho,” claims Mayberry, as well as the “right to do as one sensually pleases.” Astrologer Molly McCord recently shared that the asteroids as a whole not only represent a quantum leap for humanity, but a resurgence of the “Sovereign Feminine.”

Interesting how little remains of Sappho’s original body of work. Whether the majority of her poetry was censored, burned, lost, or destroyed, Sappho looms large in the popular imaginary. Eternal, spectral and subject to what H. De Vere Stacpoole calls “the longing inspired by suggestion,” Sappho is alive and well in the enduring feminine archetypes she has bestowed upon us. In the introduction to the small book of Sapphic poetry he helped translate, Stacpoole asks, “Would [her work] have been as beautiful unveiled as imagined?” Leah Whitehorse of Cosmic Tides writes that Sappho is alive in “your ears that hear music; your mouth that tastes and kisses; your eyes that watch the setting Sun; your heart that carries love, creativity and deep knowing.”
Indeed, “The mind of Sappho runs through all literature like a spangled thread,” confirms Stacpoole. Despite the fact that most of what remains comes to us like an echo, Stacpoole calls her the greatest lyric poet the world has ever known and “the voice of a world that has been.” In a poem by Algernon Charles Swinburne titled SAPPHICS, we are entranced by “Ghosts of outcast women” who “return lamenting… Clothed about with flame and with tears, and singing songs that move the heart of the shaken heaven, Songs that break the heart of the earth with pity.” Devotion, whether expressed in romantic bonds, friendship, to the Earth, or the Love Goddess herself, is another key aspect of Sappho.
While the energy associated with the planetary body can manifest compulsively as well as passionately or obsessively, when given release through creativity, the enduring charm of Sappho’s vision remains, like a steady beating heart. When passion demands refined expression, call on Sappho as your guiding light. According to Find Your Fate Astrology, Sappho’s placement by sign and house might reveal poetic abilities, or how one might captivate others (particularly women) with one’s unique flavor of artistry. If your Sappho were to be placed in the 10th house of Career Destiny or closely conjunct a personal planet, you might very well become known for your creative talents.

What’s the Sapphic shadow? In addition to poetic sensibility and feminine lust, Sappho also rules fear and panic as well as extremely neurotic behavior like compulsions and obsessions. Stressful placements (squares or oppositions) can shine a light on how one’s personal sexual expression is out of sync with other intimacy needs, overall gender expression or societal obligations. Inharmonious aspects to Sappho could indicate difficulties in forming or keeping close friendships, difficulty expressing healthy adult sexuality, loneliness or trouble balancing intimacy needs with other areas of life. Transits to Sappho often ignite creative inspiration or illuminate common ground between kindred spirits, accentuating collaboration and mutual pleasure.
With Sappho’s sexuality left intentionally ambiguous, she seemingly bends to the collective’s imagination. The irony of course, is that the first ‘female author’ that we hear from in Western literature is as much an ephemeral ghost and creature of fiction as she is a memory alive in all women, all poets, all femmes. As Genevieve Salerno writes for Planet Wave, Sappho’s complicated legacy “points to something at the core of the female psyche.” Otherwise put, Sappho symbolizes an otherworldly “female dimension,” which can never be fully known, qualified or explained within a male-centric society. Even Sappho’s chosen medium of words falls short in encapsulating her fullness.

While her poems in adoration of fellow women surely gave rise to the term ‘lesbian,’ Sappho’s own sexual orientation is up for debate, writes Genevieve Salerno for Planet Waves. In an article investigating asteroid Sappho in the natal charts of lesbians and lyricists, Alex Miller notes that both ‘lesbian’ and ‘Sapphic’ were coined by psychologists in the late 19th century to refer to female homosexuals, though ‘lesbian’ is both a noun and an adjective, whereas ‘Sapphic’ is purely a modifier.
Before we get into Sappho by zodiac sign in the astro-insights to follow, let’s explore Sappho in aspect to significant personal planets within the natal chart. Miller suggests that individuals with Sappho aspected to the Sun (identity), Mercury (language), Saturn (career), or Neptune (Arts), are more likely to be poets by profession. In his article naming celebrated lesbian lyricists born with Sappho prominent in their chart, Miller describes how folks with Sappho in aspect to their natal Sun (self-identity), Venus (intimacy/romance), or Mars (sexual attraction) may lean toward same-sex relationships, espouse unconventional gender roles, or simply express multifaceted feminine energy in dynamic ways.

For example, if you were to have Sappho aspecting your natal Sun, the lyrical poetess supercharges your solar purpose, increasing your attraction to sensual pleasures, romantic sensibilities and the arts. Sappho-Sun contacts might make you bolder in your sexual persona, ruthless in your defense of women and creative expression. Miller highlights folks like Gertrude Stein (Sappho opposite Sun), whose ‘coming out’ story was published in Vanity Fair in 1922. Amongst the first publicized lesbian coming out stories, Stein’s piece popularized use of the newly coined slang term ‘gay’ to describe homosexuals, “a word Stein uses more than a hundred times in the essay,” writes Miller. As a prolific linguist emblazoned in the popular imaginary for her Sapphic sexual life and famous quotation “a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” the life of expatriate American writer Gertrude Stein is an iconic example of asteroid Sappho’s impact.
Miller reveals that k.d. lang, Melissa Etheridge and Amy Ray – three popular lesbian singers – all have Sappho in a positive trine aspect to their natal Sun. k.d.lang, whose single “Constant Craving” was the winner of four Grammy awards in 1992, also came out in the same year. Amy Ray, better known as one-half of the lesbian folk duo Indigo Girls, has long been celebrated by a huge fan base, mostly women and LGBTQ+ folks. Miller also names the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Jane Lynch (Sappho square Sun), highlighting her breakout role as a butch lesbian dog trainer in the notable mockumentary “Best In Show.” Not to mention the role Lynch played in popularizing “The L Word,” in which she appeared for several seasons as the character Joyce.
If you were to have Sappho in aspect to natal Mercury, this amplifies your ability to weave new realities with words; some might even call you a word witch. A romantic mind and a natural love of language are your guiding creative force. Alex Miller’s research reveals a large number of accomplished poets with natal Mercury-Sappho contacts, including Maya Angelou, William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and John Keats.
If you were to have Sappho conjunct natal Neptune, you join the creative ranks of folks like Emily Dickinson (Sappho trine Neptune), who penned more than 1,800 poems throughout the course of her short life. With her work often centering around themes of death and mortality (Neptune/12th house), the sentimental nature and depressive episodes exemplified in her poetry also barred Dickinson from achieving much impact during her lifetime. And yet, in true Sapphic fashion, “Much of her posthumous reputation evolved from the growing feminist and suffragist movements, which sought to glorify Dickinson as the epitome of female American writers,” reflects Miller. Sylvia Plath, who began her career writing at the age of 8 in 20th-century Massachusetts, shared a similar fate to Dickinson, having her natal Sappho trine Saturn, conjunct Neptune. Best known for her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, Plath’s cosmic fate popularizing confessional poetry earned her a colossal reputation and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize following her suicide in 1963.
If you were to have natal Sappho in contact with ‘Wounded Healer’ asteroid Chiron, you are harnessing creativity as an act of therapeutic release. Born with a natal Sappho trine Chiron, Kahlo’s surrealist ‘folk art’ depicts the subjective agony she endured throughout much of her life. From a deforming childhood sickness to a publicly volatile, toxic and emotionally abusive marriage with Diego Rivera, Kahlo is an artist known for wearing her wounds (Chiron) on her sleeve. From the ongoing social travail she faced as a Latina woman, to circumstances of interpersonal assault, infertility and chronic disease, Kahlo’s works have not only long been recognized as masterpieces in the conventional fine arts sense, but have been put to use in clinical settings by psychologists encouraging female clients to open up about their traumatic experiences.

If you were to have natal Sappho in aspect to Lilith (The Disavowed Feminine), you might be a femme fatale, or at the very least, an untamable woman. You might be attracted to sirens or sexual provocateurs, turned on by the more ferocious of feminine attributes like piercing cat eyes, arched eyebrows and revealing clothing. At the intersection of sexual pleasure and feminine wrath, sexual expression may be your ultimate realm of empowerment. An aspect of the ‘shadow feminine,’ Lilith in conversation with Sappho reminds us that each and every astrology aspect has a higher and lower expression, an application for good or ill.
As I conducted research online about Sappho, I noticed that more than with other asteroids, Sappho’s core locus of community lore, her urban legend, shall we say, existed as much in professional astrology blogs as it did in aestheticized, dreamy musings from a youthful subset of self-posters on TUMBLR. At the far reaches of Sappho’s lusty wasteland, I also found an article published by Ninth House linking Sappho’s placement in the chart of notorious American serial killer, kidnapper, and rapist Ted Bundy with transits occurring within “killing charts” based on the dates of his murders. Having confessed to murdering thirty women in the 1970s, Bundy’s Sapphic potential played out as an excessive, perverted type of bloodlust, what he acted out publicly in chronic acts of violence against women. For example, on the day Bundy murdered Roberta Parks, his natal Sappho (sexual expression) opposed Venus (Love) and squared Mars (War), making an additional hard aspect to both Chiron (wounds) and Uranus (shock value).
On that note, let’s look at Sappho in aspect to the comic lovers Venus (Feminine Energy/The Lover) and Mars (Masculine Energy/The Warrior). Wanda Sykes, a stand-up comedian and actress who’s been in a public same-sex marriage since 2008, was the first woman and openly gay entertainer to host a White House Correspondents Dinner upon invitation by Obama in 2009. Meanwhile, TV news commentator Rachel Maddow, the first openly gay woman to host her own prime time show on a cable news network, was born with Sappho conjunct Venus and Mars. Her MSNBC “The Rachel Maddow Show” premiered in 2008.
Given that Sappho is often implicated in committed partnerships and romance, particularly between women and femmes, our study would not be complete without examining Sappho in synastry. If you are not familiar with this technique, Synastry is an astrological method that involves overlaying one person’s planets onto another’s to determine the compatibility, dynamics, and potential challenges within any relationship. Often, when one partner’s Sappho makes a tight conjunction with one of their partner’s personal planets, it is an indication of strong sexual chemistry. Known generally as a point of attraction, let’s just say flirtation gets turned up a notch! Asteroid Sappho makes the most potent impact when within range of the other partner’s Sun, Mars, Venus, Moon or Sappho.
With Natal Sappho in aspect to your partner’s Sun, you probably see them as your ideal in terms of physical attractiveness. Moon contacts heighten emotional sensitivity, psychic knowing and the full-spectrum cycle of feminine creative energy. In aspect to Mars, Sappho might signify warriors acting in the name of love. If love is a battlefield, Sappho-Mars contacts propel ferocious acts of corporeal communion. Venus contacts can be a heady influence, increasing the desire for romantic longing, shared artistic pursuits and vulnerable confessions of desire. Aspects to fellow celestial wordsmith Mercury is like a meeting of minds. Amplifying the flow of healthy intellectual exchange, Sappho conjunct Mercury in synastry unleashes an ocean of communicative potential, from the sweetest of soliloquies to the dirtiest of pillow talk.
Key words for Sappho in synastry include creative exchange, flirtatious communication, sexual energy/libido, sexual inspiration, artistic interaction, somatic poetry, romantic and artistic sensitivity. It’s no coincidence that possibly the best known contemporary lesbian couple, comedian Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia de Rossi, have their natal Sappho conjunct in Sagittarius. Having been happily married since 2008, the couple’s decision to move to the English countryside in 2024, prompted by the reelection of Trump, very much highlights their natal Sappho conjunct in Sag – sign of seeking, travel, expansion, higher wisdom and belief.

Sappho in Scorpio *Finding Magic in Chaos*
Celebrity Doppelgänger: Jeffree Starr
With Sappho in Scorpio, you’re as brooding and passionate as they come. Ambitious with an enchanting aura of mystery – people are drawn to your secretive, sexy allure. A walking expression of beauty and strength – you’re like a work of art to behold. Your inner Sappho reincarnated to honour the divine feminine in all her impressive depths, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Same sex relationships prove passionate and deep, as if you invented the term ‘sapphic’ love. You may also apply your passionate nature to the arts or study of the occult. You love to express your emotions in metaphor, breathing life into the unspeakable or taboo. Seeing through the eyes of the poet, you are adept at honoring your sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, daughters, female friends, and partners. You may also feel inclined to support organizations that help underprivileged women, women fleeing violence, women’s education, women who are victims of discrimination, and/or trans women. Perhaps you’re the romantic-depressive type, lingering in an idealizing love lost. Writing short stories or poems about your pain rebirths you anew. Attracted to the dark side from a young age, an insatiable need to uncover the truth drives you to the edge of existence. Drawn to femmes who are dynamic, ambitious, imaginative, aggressive, loyal and trustworthy – you turn up the heat in relationship and expect the same in return. Gentle, meek lovers simply won’t suffice. In fact, you yearn for the company of those who can drive you to the brink of insanity and back. Luckily, you believe in reincarnation.

Open-minded and accepting as they come, same sex relationships are like a thrilling joy ride. Attracted to women who are wildly adventurous and bold, a love of learning means you may go after someone from a foreign land.
Rx: Poetry
Dressing the most metaphysical of all Sapphos like the glistening of fresh dew, nothing says license-to-roam like Poetry, the UK-based, thoughtfully curated fashion brand known for its elevated fabrics and effortless sophistication.

Sappho in Capricorn *Taking the Edge Off*
Celebrity Doppelgänger: Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton
With Sappho in Capricorn, you tend to be more practical and sophisticated than most. Working hard to earn society’s respect, you never let others hinder your unique self-expression. As if enshrouded with a graceful and sophisticated aura, Sappho in Capricorn shines in positions of authority. Commanding much respect and love, excellent manners and poise give you an edge. A leader in your own right, you’re great at encouraging others to be more authentic. Excelling in fields like fashion design, writing, artistry, acting, or singing – your understated elegance turns heads. Highly creative with a focus on status and work, you may even earn yourself a reputation for fame within your circle. A rather private person, you do not broadcast your preferences and tend to be attracted to women who are quite mysterious in their own understated way. Cautious in love, you sometimes hesitate to express your true feelings. Channeling emotions into art and poetry soothes. Let your guard down once in a while to experience more spontaneity and fun. Same sex relationships tend to feel practical and reliable. Attracted to independent, sophisticated, practical and self-sufficient types, once you let down your guard, you reveal your tender interior with those you truly care about. Draw on your deep wells of nostalgia or that bittersweet ache in your heart to get your creative juices flowing. Contemplating art or reading beautiful poetry in silence makes you feel whole.
Rx: Bonez Heavyweight Hoodie
In Capricorn, Sappho is a sentimental late bloomer. In truth, the ultimate nature of Capricorn spans two worlds. Although Part-goat, part-fish, the fish part of her nature is hidden. Usually, Capricorn has forgotten how she too emerged from the waters of the unconscious, believing herself purely to be a land creature exercising freedoms on the highest mountains of achievement. Although life rewards you for your hard work, committed partnership often feels evasive until much later in life. As if waiting for your peers to measure up, for Capricorn, life gets lonely at the top. Once you come to trust that Mother Earth pours her gifts from the horn of plenty onto the deserving and undeserving alike, you stop being so hard-driving. Understanding that loneliness is universal, Capricorns treasure what has passed the test of time. After what feels like a lifetime of apparent solitude, you find that the key to healthy love begins within. In other words, put down the stick and commit to caring for your unloved inner child. In the sign of maturity and mastery, quench thy Lonely Ghost.

Made with care from the brand by the same name, introducing the Bonez Heavyweight Hoodie. 100% Genuine French terry cotton, this unisex zip hoodie is the ultimate in ghetto gothic couture. Inspiring double takes, laughter, and meaningful conversations with strangers, elegant screen-printed graphics over rugged camo revive this beyond-classic look with undeniably emo appeal.

Sappho in Aquarius *Pulsing with Provocation*
Celebrity Doppelgänger: Willow Smith
When Sappho enters Aquarius, self-expression climbs out of the box. Shocking others with your seductive charms, you live to be misunderstood. With creative expression on the unconventional spectrum, you don’t really care if others miss the radical subtext. Craving approval from no one – you say, write, think and do what you want! A creative idealist to the max, you’re known for being humanitarian and encouraging the unfettered self-expression of others. An accepting and open-minded friend to all, you surround yourself with like-minded folks. Groups and collectives elevate you. Fueled by shared ideals, your poetic communications keep the pulse of the community heart. Envisioning a more progressive future, you’re here to support the grassroots activists, tech futurists and sisterhoods of all stripes. In the sign of androgyny and queerness, your Sappho is attracted to bright, outspoken, quirky women! Unconcerned with labels when it comes to gender/sexuality, fluidity affords you freedom, and you rewrite the script as you go. Loving individuals based on their philosophies and politics, above all else, intelligence turns you on. While Capricorn builds institutions, Aquarians work through them to reform and radicalize society. Often breaking rules inadvertently – you never knew they existed!
Rx: NeuroFiber Bars
While you may love humanity, you find people difficult. A compulsive ‘outsider’ driven to break free, you probably prefer the poor and alienated to the hypocrisy of the rich, and would rather meet a tramp than a cabinet minister. The danger is identifying so completely with our inner rebel that we forfeit our sense of belonging. While deeply committed to truth, you can sometimes be inadvertently untruthful, failing to deeply at your own passionate longings. While your mind soars easily into the etheric realms of enlightened detachment, the key is to stay connected to your solar center. Don’t allow lofty idealism to mask pain you’ve failed to face. When you feel like staying out in the cold, challenge yourself to turn inward and feel. When all else fails, trust your gut.
In the sign of super-intelligence, there’s an important learning curve around the inherent connection between instinctual gut knowing (Leo/self-love/solar plexus) and cosmic unity consciousness (Aquarius/psychic unity/third eye). Did you know that brain health starts in your gut? Are stress and anxiety major leading causes of poor digestion? While Aquarius soars into the realm of the mental, the danger lies in chronic dissociation. A healthy, balanced microbiome helps regulate mood, stress, and thinking by supporting the gut–brain axis, a two-way communication highway that regulates nerve signals, immune responses, and the neurochemicals of happiness. Sometimes called the body’s ‘second brain,’ the nervous system in your gut both manages digestion and alerts the brain to imbalance. When you get ‘butterflies’ in your stomach, that’s your gut–brain axis in action.
With the latest prebiotic nosh from NeuroFiber, you get digestion, immunity, mental clarity and brain health support in one chewy snack. Repackaging fiber as nature intended, NeuroFiber Bars feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut with diverse, prebiotic whole-food fibers, vitamins, antioxidants, and optimal brain-food like dates, nuts, and seeds. A winning ingredient combo shown to increase the production of short-chain fatty acids in the gut – a key driver of immune, metabolic, and cognitive function – NeuroFiber bars are your gut-first response to modern-day living. Gluten-free and vegan, they’re a delicious way to heal intestinal inflammation, with added Green tea extract and vitamin E to protect against oxidative stress and support long-term brain health. Elevate your daily routine with a bar that perfectly marries delicious taste and functional benefits. Absolutely no preservatives, emulsifiers, gluten or artificial sweeteners. Available in Savory Dark Chocolate Cherry & Sweet Lemon Cranberry.
