Glow-Boosting Skincare: Dr. Roberta Del Campo, Founder of Dr. Roberta Skin Science

World renowned cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Roberta Del Campo is the visionary and founder behind the lauded skincare brand Dr. Roberta Skin Science. In this exclusive interview, we delve into Dr. Roberta’s interesting journey.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you decided to enter the field of dermatology.

I am a board-certified dermatologist who graduated from the University of Michigan dermatology program followed by anesthetic Derm fellowship at University of Michigan. I’ve been in private practice now for 12 years with Del Campo Dermatology & Laser Institute opening six years ago. I have always been obsessed with skin and skincare. When I was a teenager, my mother used to take me to Estée Lauder to purchase skin care products and that is where the obsession started. Further, I knew I always wanted to be a doctor as my mother struggled with an almost lifelong chronic illness, which led me to visit numerous doctors with her and understand how impactful being a physician could be not only to the patient but their families. Finally, specifically my interest in becoming a skin doctor became evident when I was in medical school in my early 20s as I developed a condition called melasma which left me very insecure and driven to help others with this specific condition. It was multiple life experiences that led me here, but ultimately my desire to be a doctor and then a focus on skin health and skin. Beauty was the trigger.

What was your motivation to start your own skincare line?

There were two main motivating factors to make my own brand. First, I wanted control over what my patients were applying to their face. I knew if I developed the products and recommended what was right for them these at home products (treatments) would help them build and maintain the skin they always wanted. Second, I wanted to focus on products that could tackle tough skin concerns, such as pigmentation and inflammation. Specifically, my personal skin issue melasma.

What sets Dr. Roberta Skin Science apart from other brands and who is your target customer?

Concentrated potent ingredients that have scientific data behind them and medical grade products that feel elegant and can be easily layered make Dr. Roberta Skin Science unique. Also, a genius chemist develops my products to be the highest of quality. Our target customer is someone who wants to put on a product that not only feels great and makes their skin look better but looks to improve skin health and skin quality. Men and women of all ages love my products, and this speaks to the versatility and quality.

You have an amazing selection of innovative products. Could you share with us your most popular products and do you plan on any new launches this year?

My Colorblend Pads and Brightening Stick are my two top sellers. Pigmentation is a very common problem due to UV exposure, air pollution and the use of blue light which is evident in phones and computer screens. Most products on the market either don’t work or they can cause inflammation and irritation, resulting in rebound hyperpigmentation or worsening of the problem. This is a unique combination of ingredients that can be used on all skin types with no irritation, and it works. I’ve had patients who use these products for just a couple weeks and are astonished at their improvement. The other two products that are top sellers include my Hydraboost Serum with 20% hyaluronic acid (most on the market are 10% or less) plus peptides to firm so you get the plumping and hydration plus the firming effect which makes all of us look a bit better. My Eye Spnx, a peptide driven eye cream, really helps to tighten and firm, improving fine lines and wrinkles. Over time this product builds collagen and Alaskan so it gives you an immediate tightening effect and thickens the skin.

Working in the skincare industry for so many years do you have any top beauty tips you could share?

Consistency is most important. If you don’t use it, you won’t see results. Just like eating healthy, exercising and beauty sleep. Keep it simple. You can overdo it with products leading to irritation and inflammation which can make us look worse and some ingredients just don’t mesh. Certain ingredients can deactivate or overactivate others.

Anything else we should know?

Marketing (advertising and packaging) can draw our attention but what’s inside the bottle is the most important so read the ingredients and educate yourself on what’s right for your skin type. A board-certified dermatologist to assess your skin and give you more guides along with recommendations can be the best place to start.
