The Perfect Winter Layer

I’ve found myself in a January conundrum: with at least two freezing months to go, I have already grown tired of my big winter coat. The sweaty, clunky experience of donning a classic parka in the city, moving between cold and warm spaces, always leaves me wanting a better solution. That’s why this winter I’m going all-in on layering, and finally taking the plunge on an unexpectedly perfect fit: a Patagonia Synchilla fleece.

Although I don’t consider myself an outdoorsy person, I couldn’t help but see the upsides of incorporating this fleece into my winter wardrobe. From a brand that’s long been committed to ethical and sustainable production, this is a staple garment. Patagonia makes this a fair trade certified garment out of recycled material and offers free repairs whenever they’re needed. Now that I’ve tried it out, I can see why customers would indeed keep this fleece on until it falls apart. I reach for it so often because it’s the perfect in-betweener jacket.

I wear the Synchilla alone on any day between 45-65 degrees, and pair it with a shell or bomber-style outer jacket when it’s properly cold outside. Even then, the look and feel is much less bulky than my puffer jacket, now relegated to the closet for a true arctic storm. The versatility of the high-buttoning neck makes it all the more practical as a layer when I forget my scarf at home.

To be completely honest, I’m as much into the aesthetic as the practicality. I fell in love with the “Across Oceans: Pitch Blue” colorway upon seeing it in the store. If you’re not afraid to wear a product originally intended for men, I have to recommend this specific look (I like an oversize fit anyways). Otherwise, you can opt for the very similar women’s cut. This is a purchase a city-dweller like myself may not realize they should make, but will not regret.
