I’m always looking for ways to take care of my mental health. From walks, therapy sessions, and making space for my emotions; I’ve been om-ing myself to well-being. But as I scrolled through my FYP I saw a journal that would step up my gratitude game. The Five Minute Journal, which is what it sounds like: five minutes to write down what I’m grateful for, hopes for the day, affirmations, and reflections.
Every page has an undated portion so even if I miss a day I can continue on without wasting pages. The header has inspirational quotes and weekly prompts which helps me to reflect through the day.
The journal is split into a day and night section. I write in my journal first thing in the AM, when I’m laying in bed or even head to the bathroom and fill out the prompts— if I’m having a particularly late start to my day (hey, no one said I was perfect!). I finish my practice by reading my daily affirmation and heading out to continue my day.
In the PM, usually after a long day, I pull the journal back out. For the evening prompts I reflect on what my highlights were. These highlights can be big– like baking my first loaf of sourdough alone, or small, like reading ten pages in a novel. The last prompt on the page is to list what I learned, which ranges from physical accomplishments to metaphysical revelations. My last step is to end the night with some meditation.
My verdict: The Five Minute journal is so easy and deeply helpful. The pages stay the same but I don’t; I grow, learn, and develop to see the goodness in everyday life which is a powerful addition to my wellness routine. Find five minutes for yourself with The Five Minute journal—you’re worth it.
