How Laser Hair Removal Changed My Skin: Thérapie Clinic

I sat in front of the bathroom mirror staring at my face. It was irritated and bleeding for the third time that week due to shaving every other day. “This can’t be normal,” I thought, dabbing my chin clean with a wet paper towel. Forget any special skincare products I wanted to start using – I could barely use my Vanicream Gentle Cleanser and Daily Moisturizer. I’d shave, rinse, hope I wouldn’t get any face-blood on my pillow that night, and repeat; for over over 5 years. No matter what expensive razor, ‘sensitive skin friendly’ shaving cream, or shaving technique I’d use, I’d always end up with the same result; bumps the size of cherry tomatoes and a complete bloody mess. Why was it so hard to have a clean-cut face? Fast forward to January 2025, I subconsciously manifested an opportunity to not only receive laser hair removal, but review it for you – thanks to Thérapie Clinic.

Laser hair removal was something that felt so out of reach, especially for me. I tried it in 2023 at a local spa in New Jersey, but I always left in pain – and not to mention the price.  It’s known to be quite expensive, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to get it until I was too old to not care about it anymore. Known as Europe’s No. 1 Med Spa, Thérapie offers a wide range of cosmetic procedures, such as injections, facials, and laser hair removal. I decided it was time to take the plunge and booked 6 sessions at the Flatiron location. I’ve since completed three, so now is the perfect time for a mid-session check in.

I started my laser hair removal journey with Thérapie in late January. As someone with light skin and dark hair, I was informed that I was a perfect candidate as the stark contrast makes it easier for the laser to detect the root of each hair follicle. Not to worry, though, as anyone can receive it, with varying results. Prior to each visit, you have to complete a form sharing all of your skin information to ensure there are no issues. I arrived with a clean, dry face, and was ready to begin.

My first impression entering the space was how clean it was; there’s a hall of mirrors with skincare products lined along the wall with purple accents everywhere you look. The technician then greets you and takes photos of the area you’re treating, and marks it with a skin-friendly marker to ensure accuracy. My technicians, Shauna and Amanda, were lovely and made me feel comfortable the entire time. They then give you a stress ball and glasses to protect your eyes from the laser. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Does it hurt? To tell you the truth – not nearly as much as I thought, thanks to the tube constantly blowing cold air onto the skin to prevent irritation. While certain spots pinched more than others, I would give it a 4 at the very worst on the pain scale. Each session only lasts about 15 minutes, and they apply aloe and sunscreen at the end to ensure protection and lessen irritation. Post-care is minimal – try to avoid direct contact with the sun, don’t use skincare actives for a few days, and keep your routine very simple.

The interesting thing about laser hair removal is it literally burns the root of each follicle. So, results are not immediate. It takes about 2 weeks. The shedding is pretty shocking; your hair just starts falling out! It also helps to use a light exfoliant by this point – I use the Dermalogica Daily Milkfoliant. I’ve been seeing a decrease in hair growth and have found my cheeks and neck to be very smooth. Certain areas are more stubborn, like the chin, and take a bit more time to see results, often falling out in patches.

I’m incredibly excited to continue my laser hair removal journey with Thérapie Clinic – and will be sure to update you after my second round of treatments. If you’re interested in their services, visit their website, as they are always offering bundles and discounts to make skin services accessible. Trust me, you’ll be shocked at the results!
