BN Los Angeles: This Introductory Massage Is Exactly What My Sore Muscles Needed

I recently learned that women lose more bone density as they age. And while I don’t think I’m that old yet, I decided to try and protect my bones by lifting weights. I walk down the block to our local YMCA twice a week, following a simple weight lifting routine my husband made for me.

But boy, lifting weights can be tough! Especially when I lift two days in a row. So I decided to help ease my sore muscles by treating myself to a 50-minute introductory deep tissue massage at my local Hand & Stone in Culver City.

My massage experience began by filling out standard paperwork, including my preferences for lighting, music, and massage pressure. I was then met by my massage therapist, Darla, who led me back to my massage room. After disrobing, I got all snuggled under the sheets. The massage table was heated, which was an unexpected surprise. I was so cozy that I nearly fell asleep before Darla returned.

Darla asked me if there were any spots she would like me to focus on, and I told her my lower back and shoulders. She set to work massaging my shoulders, moving her way down my back. She then used Himalayan salt stone, an additional massage enhancement I opted for. At first, I thought she would just place the stones on my back and leave them there before shifting the stones to other parts of my body. Instead, she used the stones to actually massage my body.

While they were warm, Darla kept moving so I never felt overheated. She explained that the fine salt grains of the stones help exfoliate the skin, leaving it soft and hydrated. So in addition to a massage, I also received a mini back cleanse!

After 50 minutes, my massage was sadly over. Darla left me with a hot towel with a lavender scent to inhale to complete my treatment. I was then led to the zen room, where I sat in a comfy armchair, sipping on water.

My massage was great. While Hand & Stone isn’t a fancy massage, I felt taken care of and enjoyed the Himalayan salt stone addition. I think Hand & Stone massages are particularly ideal for those with athletic injuries or chronic pain, as this does seem to be one of their key focuses.

After my massage, I feel ready to hit the weights again!
