Drizzle Honey is a boutique brand of honey that is good for buyers and the bees as well. It’s 100% raw, all natural, sustainable and allergen free. Not to mention simply delicious. This golden, fruit of the nectar is brimming with nutrients and antioxidants, upping its ante for why you’ll want to sample a sweet little jar of goodness. Founder and overall Queen Bee Aja Horsley began the brand over a decade ago after spending time in the hives herself working on a beekeeping project as an environmental scientist. Horsley spoke with us about how the brand is about so much more than just honey. This is her drizzle on things.
Tell us how you came to “bee” so to speak. How did you find your passion for the honey-making process?
My passion for honey-making began in 2014 while working as an environmental scientist at a college in my hometown. I helped lead a rooftop beekeeping project and was introduced to the intricate world of bees and honey production. I quickly became captivated by the process, investing in my own hives, harvesting honey, and selling it at local artisan markets. ?I had one of my best friends design Drizzle’s logo, and started bottling jars in my kitchen. Things have grown so much since then!
In 2016, I developed an allergy to bee stings just as I had decided to go full time with Drizzle, which meant I could no longer manage hives personally. This challenge led me to pivot my approach, partnering with sustainable beekeepers who shared my vision for ethical and environmentally friendly honey production. This allowed me to continue my passion while focusing on growing the Drizzle brand but also reinforced my commitment to supporting local beekeepers and creating unique, high quality honey products.
What sets Drizzle apart from other honeys?
Drizzle isn’t just about honey — it’s about sustainability, health, and innovation, making it a standout choice for conscious consumers. We also don’t just sell traditional honeys – we offer innovative products like our Superfood Honeys, which is infused with nutrient-rich ingredients like turmeric and wild blueberries, and spicy Hot Honey, which adds a bold kick for culinary use. All our honeys naturally stay soft and spreadable which is a huge bonus, as they will not crystallize while sitting on your shelf.
Drizzle offers raw honey, meaning it’s unpasteurized and maintains its natural health benefits, including antioxidants, vitamins, and antimicrobial properties. Many commercial honeys are heated and filtered which strips these benefits away. Lastly, we are a Certified B Corporation as well as being female founded, which means we are committed to transparency in our social and environmental impact.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about bees or honey that you can share with us?
A single honey bee produces about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its entire lifetime.
What is the most popular flavor?
Honestly, this is hard to peg down as it changes by season and the channel that we sell in. Our spicy Hot Honey, Turmeric Gold and classic White and Golden raw honeys are always big sellers. Cinnamon Spiced is a colder-season favorite as well.
Why did you think there was a need for Drizzle? What do you hope to share with others through the brand?
Drizzle filled a gap in the market by offering sustainable, high quality and innovative honeys. Wellness and health consciousness are huge topics of conversation these days, as is bee-health and humans impact on the environment. Through the brand I hope to change the way people think about honey – both in how it can be used, and also in why it is important from a nutrition and sustainability standpoint.
What’s the sweetest thing about making honey for a living?
Working with a team of employees, coworkers and manufacturing partners that are dedicated to our mission and values is a huge reason why I continue to do what I do for a living. We are passionate about what we do because it is important work to grow a company that takes market share from less sustainable and ethical honey companies. Eating as much honey as my heart desires is also a huge bonus!
Drizzle Honey is one sweet and sustainable bit of goodness.
