I didn’t think I needed a frozen bread subscription box in my life, but then I tried Bittman’s and it has quickly become my new favorite subscription box.
The process is straightforward – you build your own box of bread, select the frequency in which you want it delivered and then choose to eat it fresh or store it in your freezer. It’s real bread made with organic flour without additives or overprocessing – “In crust we trust” as their saying goes. It arrives perfectly packed, and the convenience of having high-quality bakery loaves ready to pop into the oven whenever you want is a total game-changer. It solves the problem of buying a fresh loaf from the store only to have half of it go stale before you can finish it.
I started with the Box of 6, which feels like the most well-rounded introduction: whole wheat sourdough, a two-pack of sourdough baguettes, cinnamon walnut raisin sourdough, rye sourdough, sourdough focaccia and corn sourdough. It also includes a tub of spreadable salted butter (yum), which is honestly worth the subscription price all on its own.
Every loaf in the box has its own distinct flavor. The cinnamon walnut raisin sourdough is versatile enough to work as breakfast, snack or dessert. The rye is ideal for sandwiches that feel a bit more substantial. The focaccia is nestled in my freezer, ready for heating when I have house guests later this month and I already know they are going to love it. The corn sourdough has a subtle, unique flavor and the baguettes are exactly what you want them to be: crisp, reliable and hard to stop eating once you start slicing into them.
The overall experience feels closer to what bread is meant to be rather than a long-life pantry product. Founded by Mark Bittman, the brand is built around a philosophy that bread should be simple, nourishing and made with recognizable ingredients. It feels good knowing exactly what is going into my food without any weird chemicals or preservatives.
Since I don’t have time to make bread from scratch, this subscription box works perfectly for me. It fits right into a busy schedule while still letting you enjoy that fresh-baked, comforting bakery experience at home and I can’t wait to order more.
