Who doesn’t enjoy visiting diners such as the Lighthouse Diner in Wantaugh or Ellen’s Stardust Diner, the 1950’s retro-themed diner offering shakes and classic diner food served by a waitstaff belting out popular Broadway tunes.

Numerous recipes in this book brought back fond memories of my go-to diner orders served up morning, noon, or night. I enjoyed paging through the recipes in the The New American Diner Cookbook to discover new menu additions included along with tried-and-true diner staples. There’s a lot to love, including the stylish retro cover, “Tidbit” sidebars featuring bonus tips, and the clever menu format referencing the cookbook’s content pages.

Breakfast At Any Time Of Day

With recipes ranging from fluffy pancakes to seven kinds of classic omelet combinations and jumbo-sized diner muffins, I will be sampling the breakfast recipes for certain.

Starters, Burgers, And Sandwiches

Are you hungry yet? Chow down on beloved diner classics-chicken wings or a hefty half-pound burger.

Passing On Dessert Is Not An Option

I enjoyed paging through the dessert section to rediscover diner classic desserts: chocolate cake, coconut cream pie, apple pie, rice pudding, strawberry cheesecake, an old-fashioned sundae recipe and so much more!

Final Thoughts

In addition to the recipes, I enjoyed reading the section on short-order cook lingo. When requesting a Western omelet, ask the server to give you a “Cowboy with Spurs” along with a cup of joe (coffee). When placing a carry-out order, instruct the server to “ put wheels on it.”

As a diehard diner fan, paging through this entertaining cookbook reminded me of why diners are so special and beloved.
