I started my SPF journey when I was nineteen years old. Now, about to turn twenty-five, I’ve spent the last six years testing over one hundred sunscreens and finding ways to protect my skin from the sun without sacrificing elegance, fashion, or most importantly, compromising my health. While sunscreen is a basic necessity to achieve this, there are other fun ways to find protection – and I’m here to share my favorites.
Sunscreens
If you have sensitive skin like I do, you’ll find you can only really tolerate mineral sunscreens, along with a select collection of Asian sunscreens. My TikTok page is all about reviewing them (naturally, my handle is @spfwithpeter_) and I’ve officially compiled a list of my top three options that I truly think can work for most people.
- Summer Fridays ShadeDrops SPF 30 Mineral Milk Sunscreen ($36)
This is a zinc-oxide based formula with a milky texture that glides onto the skin effortlessly. The opposite of a thick cream, the beige fluid blends really well without leaving a white cast on so many skin tones without being tinted.
- INNBEAUTY PROJECT Mineral Sun Glow SPF 43 ($35)
If tinted is your vibe, however, INNBEAUTY PROJECT is my pick. Available in three shades, the light-weight formula leaves a natural finish that will satisfy both matte and glowy lovers alike. It’s also hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and has a Super Antioxidant Complex to hydrate, brighten and protect the skin from the environment.
- Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum ($12)
The Korean sunscreen industry has so many amazing options. However, the Water-Fit Sun serum has to be my favorite. It’s thin, yet incredibly hydrating without being greasy. And, hello, it’s $12!
Clothing
While sunscreen is a fantastic way to prevent sun damage, it’s better to block your skin with physical barriers. Normal clothing is only so effective, and it’s a great idea to invest in SPF Protective Clothing to ensure maximum protection.
- JOJU
If there’s any product that stands out in this list, it’s definitely the Laguna Waist Length Long-Sleeve Women’s Sun Shirt by JOJU. Known for “Celebrating a luxury life lived outdoors,” JOJU specializes in UPF 50+ sun shirts for everyone. The shirts come in 5 colors – black, navy blue, diva blue, white, and hot pink. I received the black shirt in large, as they are slim fitting and designed to be breathable while active. The shirt is extremely lightweight, made of Italian fabric fit for the most sensitive skin. Perhaps my favorite part is the anti-oder aspect, as it stays fresh throughout my workout and dries quite quickly. I also love the thumb holes, as I’m able to protect my hands – an often neglected part of the body when it comes to sun protection. JOJU was founded by Valerie Schimel, a Miami Beach based entrepreneur with a passion for the outdoors. With summer right around the corner, I was thrilled to receive one of their shirts, which I’ve been wearing multiple times a week during my morning run. If you’re looking to invest in an SPF-protective shirt and support a woman-owned business, I would certainly start with JOJU.

- Paula’s Choice Limited-Edition Team SPF Strapback Hat
I was lucky enough to receive the Team SPF hat from one of my favorite brands, Paula’s Choice. The hat comes in beige, with ‘Team SPF’ embroidered on the side – neutral and fitting for most outfits. Of course, it’s necessary to always wear SPF in addition to the hat – but it’s always a great idea to invest in a stylish hat to support your sun protective outfit.
You can purchase this limited-edition hat on the Paula’s Choice website – get it while it’s on sale!
