Lei Wine Bar, 15-17 Doyers Street
Perched on the corner of one of Chinatown’s intricate streets sits Lei Wine Bar. I found myself strolling through the winding streets, suddenly immersed in a new neighborhood where I was removed from the rush of post-workday Manhattan. Lei stood out with its understated signage, a calm contrast amidst the maximalist visuals that typically define Chinatown. A white-and-maroon awning greets guests as they enter into a space that feels instantly familiar, like stepping into a friend’s well-loved home.
I settled into a small counter seat near the entrance of Lei. The restaurant was crowded with a familiar, easy energy. It was as if everyone had just gotten off work, but the tension from their busy days had somehow been left at the door. Inside, the carefully curated homey vibe put everyone at ease. It felt warm and communal.
We explored the diverse wine list but couldn’t settle on a single bottle – so each of my dining companions chose their own glass. Orange, white, and sparkling made for a refreshing summer lineup. We paired our beverages with an array of small plates; my favorites were the pickled cucumber, radish and celery, along with the sweet and sour beef short rib. With a pleasantly tingling tongue from the pickled celery, I chatted with Lei’s founder, Annie Shi.
Annie has created a respite from the chaos of downtown – a thoughtfully curated wine bar where every detail feels intentional. Shi’s expertise, honed from her experience as co-owner of two other notable NYC restaurants, is reflected in Lei’s refined presentation and elevated experience. The emphasis that Annie places on community is obvious from Lei’s welcoming storefront on a pedestrian-only street to the seasoned staff of industry pros who have impeccable taste, and are happily willing to guide your menu decision making.
A dependable gem among Chinatown wine bars, Lei Wine Bar is a must-visit for wine connoisseurs and the fine dining savants alike.
