Bacall’s Family Steakhouse is like stepping back in time to old Hollywood in the middle of Times Square. The décor is a slice of history, centered on photos of Lauren Bacall, the famous Hollywood actress, and her husband, the legendary actor, Humphrey Bogart. If you do not know what to expect from Bacall’s, it looks like an ordinary steakhouse with a Hollywood theme, but that is far from the truth. Bacall’s is an eclectic mix of historical Hollywood vibe along with unique cuisine rooted in Jewish Romanian foods, an homage to Lauren Bacall’s heritage. You really must experience Bacall’s to believe how utterly fresh and delicious the food tastes.
The food, oh the food… Where do I begin to tell the story of how great it is? The appetizers were varied and incredible. We had the Fyvush Finkel Egg Rolls, which are fried, with a pastrami and cabbage filling. They were easily the best egg rolls I ever tasted, particularly because of the freshness and blend of seasonings. The Fried Kreplach, Brisket and Onion Dumplings also left me in awe, and unprepared for the incredible flavor. The Angels with Dirty Faces salad was also amazing, made with a combination of Burrata, Prosciutto, Salami, Fig Chutney and Balsamic Drizzle dressing that was an incomparable blend of flavors. By then we were having a foodgasm and partially in taste shock since we were unaware of how great our appetizers would be. In fairness, this food should come with a warning so there is no surprise.
The main entrees also did not disappoint, but we were ready for the continuation of our food high. The Seared Salmon with Creamy Leek Sauce was crisp on the outside and tender inside as we wanted, with perfect seasoning. The Herbed Rotisserie Filet Mignon was also well seasoned, and extremely tender even though I had it medium well done. The creamed spinach was the best I have tasted, because it was so fresh and lightly cooked, not at all soggy.
Do not even think of leaving without trying Betty’s Classic Favorite-Roumanian Donut. It is perfection with a hole in the middle, which is dense, with just the right amount of sweetness.
As if the food is not reason enough to go to Bacall’s, you can also time your meal to enjoy the nightly music and comedy of performer, Dani Luv, at 7:45 pm. He will have you up and dancing, laughing, and enjoying yourself even beyond the great food. Check the website for other new monthly comedy shows as well. www.bacallsnyc.com.
Come up and see Bacall’s some time, you will not regret it.
