Tinted Sunscreen – Is It Actually Better? Featuring CoTZ & Tizo

There’s no need to point out that there are a million different sunscreens on the market. That being said, those of us with sensitive skin have to niche down to strictly mineral formulas. The problem with said mineral formula, is that the main filter, Zinc Oxide, leaves a pretty noticeable white cast in most products. So, brands came up with a tinted sunscreen to avoid this problem. But, is it really the better option? Does it provide better protection? Is it truly more cosmetically elegant? I put these questions to the test to figure it out once and for all.

I was thrilled to receive an array of tinted and non-tinted sunscreens from CoTZ and TiZo, two of the best sun-care brands in the game. After testing each product, I was able to sort through the best qualities they bring.

CoTZ

Flawless Complexion SPF 50 (Lightly Tinted)

What makes CoTZ unique is their commitment to creating mineral sunscreens that blend effortlessly into the skin without a white cast – all while being reef safe. Starting off strong with my absolute favorite product of the bunch is the Flawless Complexion SPF 50. It comes in 2 shades – Lightly Tinted or Richly Tinted, and is totally safe for sensitive skin. The finish is dewey, and may need some powder if your skin leans oily. Nevertheless, I love it because it blends into the skin so well without leaving a heavy makeup look – it just evens out my skin tone. It’s also oil-free and non-comedogenic, so it’s safe for those who struggle with acne.

Face Prime & Protect SPF 40 Tinted

Next up is one that is perfect for those who love a matte look. The Prime & Protect is perfect for summertime, as it dries down really quickly without leaving any shine. The texture is definitely one of a primer, so I would make sure to hydrate your skin before applying. I personally prefer a natural glow to my sunscreen, but will be sure to reach for this one when I’m feeling a little extra greasy.

Face Prime & Protect SPF 40 Non-tinted

Finally, the Prime & Protect also comes non-tinted. While the tinted version finishes in matte, this sunscreen has a hint of sheer. Similarities include working efficiently as a primer and smoothing out the skin for a pore-less look. Differences, however, include the obvious – it isn’t tinted. The white cast is present, but can be minimized by working it into the skin, or perhaps working as a first layer before makeup or a tinted moisturizer.

TiZo

AM Replenish Lightly Tinted

Let’s move to TiZo, a brand founded on the premise that “protecting skin from harmful UV rays shouldn’t be a compromise.” I couldn’t agree more, which is why I was so excited to add a few of their products into my routine. Also specializing in mineral-based sunscreens, TiZo works with dermatologists and skincare professionals to deliver the highest quality product. The AM Replenish Lightly Tinted not only protects the skin with an SPF of 40, but it’s formulated with ceramides to help repair any damage in the skin barrier. The tint is in between the CoTZ Lighty Tinted and Prime & Protect – a happy medium. It has a mousse-like texture, and glides very nicely onto the skin. I would also hydrate before this sunscreen, as it leans more matte.

Mineral Stick Non-tinted

If I had to pick a runner-up for my favorite product of the bunch, it would be the Mineral Stick. I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for any on-the-go sunscreen option, but this one exceeded my expectations. Although non-tinted, the white cast really goes away after application, making it an optimal choice for a beach day, or maybe a hike in the park. It feels extremely gentle on the skin, and is even safe for babies!

So, which is better – Tinted or Non-tinted?

The truth is, like every other aspect of skincare, it depends on your needs and personal goals. To state the facts, tinted sunscreens can offer additional protection due to the iron oxides often found in the formula that include blue-light protection, one many non-tinted formulas lack. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t a fantastic option – they don’t stain your clothes, and truly keep the face as natural as possible. In my personal opinion, lightly tinted is the way to go. The white cast is minimized, and the iron oxides are included for that extra protection. But, to be clear, the best sunscreen is the one you decide to wear
