Sweet-Smelling Hair: Q & A with Sprae Co-Founders Kayla Heinrichs and Scarlett Boyd

Co-Owners of Brio Hair Company, hair designers Kayla Heinrichs and Scarlett Boyd created Sprae, a fabulous hair perfume that is wonderfully fragrant and enriched with amino acids, vitamins, and omega-3’s. I recently had the pleasure to speak with Heinrichs and Boyd to learn about their background, fragrance, and more.

Our readers would like to get to know you two a bit better. Could you tell us a bit about your backgrounds?

We both have extensive experience as hairstylists, about 30 years combined. We actively work behind the chair as hairstylists and lead a team of 11 employees at Brio Hair Company in the greater Boston area.

What sparked your passion to create your own hair perfume?

We always say our favorite hobby is experiencing new restaurants, and it’s so fun to get ready and style your hair to go out. But when you leave the restaurant your freshly washed and styled hair smells like food and it’s such a buzz kill. Women do whatever we can to stretch out our wash days. Anything that interferes in making us have to wash and blow dry our hair sooner is an immediate problem. So, we created Sprae. We wanted to create a purposeful product with actual hair health benefits, that’s small and sleek enough to always have on you.

What sets your brand apart from others and do you have future plans to design more products?

At Sprae, we are elevating hair care with a perfume that goes beyond fragrance. We understand that life gets busy – whether you’re extending your blow-dry, whipping up dinner, hitting the gym, or dining out. Those daily activities can leave your hair in need of a refresh. That’s where we Sprae! Traditional perfumes contain harsh alcohols that leave your locks brittle and dehydrated. Sprae is infused with vitamins, amino acids, and omega 3s. This means not only does it keep your hair smelling amazing, but it also weightlessly hydrates, minimizes frizz and eliminates static. Sprae as a brand is still in its infancy. We’re just getting started. We love customer feedback and that’s how we develop future products. A body spray was frequently requested, but we must make it purposeful.

Working in the hair industry for so many years, do you have any top tips you could share with us?

We love sharing all the knowledge we’ve gained throughout the years. Our best advice to consumers would be to find the stylist that understands your goals, and work with them to get you there. There are a million products out there and we know it can be overwhelming, confusing, and costly. That’s why the purposeful component of Sprae was the most important to develop for our customers: multi-use, multi-functional products are the future. Minimalism in the beauty world is having a moment.

Anything else we should know?

We mentioned that we love customer feedback to develop new products, but what we didn’t expect were the stories of how people used Sprae. Many customers say they keep one in their purse, one in the gym bag, and one in the car. We received messages from our Spraers saying how grateful they were to have had it on hand to spritz right before a date or walking into an interview. Their confidence was high and it gave them the most refreshing revival.
