I have a lot of hair. And by a lot, here is how a hair stylist once described it: “This child has more hair than a bear.” As you can imagine, I am constantly trying new products to tame my unruly curls. My curls sit somewhere between 3A and 3B, but this is dependent on the weather, how dehydrated my curls are, and their general mood (the curly girlies know what I’m talking about).
In pursuit of wrangling my curls, I came across Etniker. A Colombian brand from the Valle del Cauca region, Etniker specializes in hair care for natural curls and waves. What makes the brand unique is its mix of natural ingredients, most of which are native to Colombia. One ingredient is the Paradise Nut, which grows alongside Colombia’s Magdalena River. The nut has moisturizing properties, which when combined with other moisturizers like shea butter and flaxseed, make for great hydration.
I tried out the Caribe Hair Treatment, the Curl Defining Styling Cream, and the Hydroelixir. The Caribe Hair Treatment is a 4-in-1 treatment, but I used it primarily as a conditioner. The first thing I noticed was its smell – all Etniker’s hair care has a delightfully fruity scent. The second thing I noticed was its slip. The conditioner easily slid through my curls, helping detangle it. The best part is that the Caribe Hair Treatment comes in a massive bottle. I’ve been able to use it multiple times, unlike other hair care that comes in puny bottles.
I next used the Curl Defining Styling Cream, which I combed through my wet hair. I don’t often blow dry or straighten my hair, so this was a literal style-and-go situation. I found that the cream, which is free of parabens and silicones, worked decently, but worked much better when paired with the Hydroelixir. The Hydroelixir is a lightweight oil, made from 13 natural oils.

Since the Hydroelixir comes in a small bottle, I accidentally forgot I had it the first time I used the Styling Cream. The next time I washed my hair I remembered it, and I brushed it through my hair after putting on the styling cream. This time around, my curls were more defined, shiny, and less frizzy. I’m curious to try the Hydroelixir on my dry curls to see how they absorb the oil.
Etniker will definitely become a mainstay in my curl care routine. I’m grateful to have found a brand that can help keep them somewhat tamed. I doubt my curls will ever fully behave themselves, but this is a start!
