If you, like me, have recently found yourself wondering whether your mattress is now of retirement age, let this be your sign: it’s time to upgrade your sleeping arrangements.
I got to thinking about this in conversation with a friend’s parents, who were a few weeks into using a new mattress and feeling refreshed. Once you pass middle age, they said, you begin to feel every day of high heels, un-flossed teeth, and bad box spring beds you ignored in your misspent youth. This struck a cord with me, as someone who wears daily sunscreen and teched-out running shoes in the name of investing in my future self. Why am I spending 8+ hours a night on the worst bed, like, ever?
I came up with a few answers: it’s inconvenient to change, and I don’t know what I’m looking for. And then I thought I might be able to solve these same problems for you, reader, and it sent me on the hunt for the perfect mattress solution.
Finding the Right Fit
I tried going into a home store and ‘testing out’ the various options, and aside from the general awkwardness of laying down on various beds in public I took nothing from the experience. My inner monologue sounded like: “Bed. Bed. Bed. Bed. They all feel like beds. What now?”. Although I do believe the body keeps the score over time, I was not a reliable source on the best mattress for myself. In short, I needed the difference explained to me. So, online I went!
What I found in my search was REM-Fit, and their various mattress options. The site’s quiz helped me to pick out the 600 Lux Hybrid Mattress based on how I sleep, and I placed my order.
Getting My Mattress
The process was set up to make things easy for me, especially when I got a text prompting me to schedule home delivery at a date and time when I could be home. I got a call to let me know their ETA, and it was carried directly to my bedroom when the team arrived.
I opened up the parcel and let the memory foam expand for a few hours, heading out to pick out new some bedding and complete the transformation. At this point I was really excited to get ready for bed and try it out.
Imagine me in a floppy night cap (not really) and striped pyjamas (this one’s true), ready to lay down on my brand-new mattress for the first time. I finally flopped into bed, and was pleased this hybrid mattress lived up to the hype. REM-Fit’s specialty is a pocket spring and memory foam feel in one, which means support without stiffness. You can see with this mattress that the team means business—It’s much thicker than the sad old mattress I’d had before, and doesn’t just collapse, which was my fear when ordering something with ‘memory foam’ in the name.
What It’s Worth
The customer I’d recommend this for is anyone who doesn’t want to risk a bad decision, or spend their weekend (or risk their back) doing the dirty work of lugging a mattress around. The mattress is guaranteed if it’s not right for you, but it’s reliable enough as a medium-firm, well-supported mattress that it will suit most people anyways. I loved not having to worry about it as I moved house and left my old mattress behind, that slightly uncomfortable chapter closed for good.
If you’re in the market, check out the 600 Lux Hybrid Mattress or take the REM-Fit quiz.
